New Purdue coach Darrell Hazell (pictured) announced last week the additions of six assistants. It appears he’s found a seventh.
Coachingsearch.com reported Thursday that John Shoop, formerly the offensive coordinator at North Carolina and a position coach at multiple NFL clubs, has joined Hazell’s staff as the team’s OC. Tom Dienhart of the Big Ten Network confirmed the report, although nothing official has come from Purdue as of yet.
Shoop actually interviewed with the Tennessee Titans earlier this month, according to the Tennessean, and Shoop’s ties are mostly in the NFL. He’s coached on staffs at Oakland, Tampa Bay, Chicago and Carolina, most of the time as a quarterbacks coach. However, he did briefly serve as the OC for the Bears from 2001-03. Results were...mixed.
His stint at UNC as offensive coordinator lasted from 2007-11. He’s been out of coaching for the past year.
