And now it’s officially scheduling day here at CFT.
On top of the AAC’s 2015 slate announcement and the teams for the 2016 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game being revealed, BYU and Utah State announced Thursday that the football programs have reached an agreement on an extension of their in-state rivalry. The two new games will be played at Utah State on Oct. 4, 2019 and at BYU on Oct. 2, 2020, which are both Friday nights.
The two teams are now scheduled to meet every season between now and 2020: in Provo in 2016, 2018 and 2020 and 2015, 2017 and 2019 in Logan.
“I believe it’s important to continue this longstanding football series with Utah State. There is a lot of history and tradition between the two universities and the recent games have been very competitive,” said BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe in a statement. “Scott Barnes has done an outstanding job at USU, and the Aggies have gained strength in all areas of their football program. I’ve loved the in-state rivalry with USU as a player, coach and administrator and look forward to these future games.”
The Aggies and Cougars have met 84 times previously, with BYU holding a 46-35-3 edge in the series. USU won last year’s meeting 35-20 in Provo. It was USU’s first road win in the rivalry since 1978.
Incidentally, only Utah has played more games (89) against BYU than Utah State.
“We are excited to continue our home and home series with BYU long-term,” said Barnes. “This rivalry is important to both institutions and the state of Utah.”
