Father of three Div. 1-A players killed in Alaska plane crash

As you have probably heard by now, a plane crash in Alaska claimed the life of five people Monday afternoon, including former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens.

Unfortunately, the deadly crash has also touched the game of college football in the most monumental and tragic of ways.

According to a press release issued by Indiana University, Bill Phillips Sr. was one of the five who perished on a mountain near the fishing town of Dillingham, Alaska. Phillips is the father of Indiana freshman tight end Paul Phillips, Virginia sophomore tight end Colter Phillips and Stanford senior offensive lineman Andrew Phillips.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Indiana University community are with Paul, his family and everyone touched by this tragedy,” IU head coach Bill Lynch said in a statement. “Please be respectful of the family as they deal with this private matter.”

As unbelievable as it sounds, there is a silver lining in this horrific tragedy for the Phillips family. The thirteen-year-old brother of the three players was one of nine passengers on the plane; Willy Phillips was one of the four survivors.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. Phillips during this unimaginable time.
