With former Pitt coach Walt Harris joining the Akron Zips as quarterback coach and passing game coordinator, Dave Wannstedt needs to yet again look in another direction for a replacement for former coordinator Matt Cavanaugh. Last week, there were rumors of Jets WR coach Noel Mazzone being the leading candidate, but the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette now thinks he might be out of the running. That leaves Wannstedt throwing Hail Marys, and looking at a Pittsburgh native, who just completed his first season as Cal’s offensive coordinator. Frank Cignetti, who is also the quarterback coach at Cal, has emerged as the new potential savior for the now LeSean McCoy-less Pitt offense.Cignetti’s father was a coaching mainstay in the region as well, spending time as the head coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It’ll be interesting to see if Pitt can come up with a compensation package that will lure Cignetti back home.
