LSU is quietly untying its assistant coaches’ contracts away from Les Miles

Over the past few years, LSU’s athletics administration began tying contracts of its assistant coaches to the employment status of head coach Les Miles. Namely, if Miles was fired or took another job, LSU could cut all ties to his assistants with impunity.

That sticking point drove former defensive coordinator John Chavis from Baton Rouge to College Station; Chavis felt his stature in the profession should exempt him from such a clause. AD Joe Alleva disagreed, against the protests of Miles.

It appears Alleva has come around, as Ross Dellenger of the (Baton Rouge) Advocate reports that the Tigers are quietly unbundling their assistant coaches from their head coach.

Dellenger wrote that new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (contract signed in January), new running backs coach Jabbar Juluke and new wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig did not have the so-called “Les Miles Clause” included in their contracts.

Similarly, defensive line coach Ed Orgeron had his Miles Clause removed when he was promoted to recruiting coordinator -- along with a $150,000 raise, as did offensive line coach Jeff Grimes when he received a $125,000 raise.

Dellenger also wrote that outside linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto and tight ends coach Steve Ensminger have not seen a change in their contract statuses, but offensive coordinator Cam Cameron had his Miles Clause carried over into his new contract.
