Mike Stoops close to rejoining brother Bob with Sooners

Whether it be Ohio State or Nebraska or South Carolina, Mike Stoops’ name has been connected to openings at several football programs since his firing by Arizona in October.

In the end, however, the Stoops’ may just end up keeping it in the family once again.

Toward the end of Friday night’s telecast of Oklahoma’s Insight Bowl win over Iowa, ESPN sideline reporter Heather Cox stated there were “strong indications” that Stoops would be joining his brother Bob Stoops’ Sooner coaching staff at some point in the not-too-distant future. Stoops was in attendance at the bowl game and was shown on the sidelines during the telecast.

Brent Venables is currently OU’s defensive coordinator, but Mike Stoops would reportedly come in as a co-coordinator. Sources told the Daily Oklahoman that Venables would not be opposed to the addition if that’s the direction the head coach wants to head.

The Daily Oklahoman wrote after the game that Mike Stoops “is looking more and more like the cavalry coming to the rescue to work with Venables and brother Bob.”

Bob Stoops attempted to deflect any bigger meaning behind his brother’s appearance at the game.

“He was at the [Texas] Tech game, too, and that didn’t work real well,” the OU head coach said after the win. “It means he’s my brother and he lives not too far away. Why would he not come to the game?”

Prior to his nearly eight-year run as the Wildcats’ head coach, Mike Stoops served as his brother’s defensive coordinator from 1999 through 2003.
