Nebraska QB (for now) Bubba Starling headed to Lincoln this weekend

Nebraska signee Bubba Starling will have until Aug. 15 to decide if he wants to play college football, or sign a $5-$7 million deal with the Kansas City Royals franchise after they selected him with the fifth overall pick in this year’s MLB Draft.

Until then, Starling is reportedly heading to Lincoln this weekend to join his Nebraska teammates for summer conditioning.

In an interview with Omaha World-Herald, Starling’s father, Jim Starling, said his son would be on campus starting Sunday. Workouts for the Huskers start the following day on Monday.

Whether his son will still be there in six weeks is still up in the air.

The elder Starling wouldn’t indicate whether his son is leaning toward football or baseball, leaving the Big Red faithful with a measly “We can’t say anything at all.”

That means it’s up to us to speculate.

Obviously, we don’t know what’s going on in Starling’s head, but the fact that he plans to make the trip to Lincoln for the summer indicates he’s at least considering the option of staying. And he wouldn’t be the first quarterback to shun a professional baseball salary for college football (see Russell Wilson and Kyle Parker).

Then again, that’s just our opinion. And, clearly, it shouldn’t be taken very seriously.
