Ole Miss holding breath on Shackelford injury

Until the medical results are in, you’ll have to pardon those associated with the Ole Miss football program if any breaths they take are few and far between.

Rebels head coach Houston Nutt confirmed after practice Monday that linebacker D.T. Shackelford suffered an injury to his right knee during a positional drill earlier in the day. An MRI will be performed to determine the extent of the damage, although Nutt, who was said to be solemn when discussing the injury, didn’t seem very confident that any type of good news will be heard when the results come in.

Shackelford’s own reaction, too, seemed to indicate that the injury could be fairly serious in nature.

“Hope it’s not too serious, but you don’t know,” Nutt said. Asked if early indications were that it was serious, Nut said it “could be, could be, could be. But we won’t know until after the MRI, for sure.”

Shackelford slammed his helmet to the turf repeatedly and winced after suffering the injury. After a few seconds of being attended to by team trainers, he was helped into the training room.

Shackelford is expected to undergo an MRI Tuesday.

The junior played in 12 games in 2010, starting six of them. He led the team in sacks with five, and finished second with nine tackles for loss.
