RECEIVING GREAT’S SON WALKING ON AT UCLA

With 49ers great Joe Montana‘s son Nick Montana making his recruiting tour this month, visiting Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, and just about everywhere else on Spring Break, coach Rick Neuheisel will be having another son of a 49ers Hall-of-Famer hanging around quite a bit for the next few years. That’s because Jerry Rice Jr. of the Menlo School in the Bay Area, has deciding to walk-on at UCLA. The 5-foot-10, 180 pound Rice put up decent number during his high school career, and had a lone offer to play for the Air Force, but decided to come to Westwood as a preferred walk-on.Rice’s final decision came down to being a preferred walk-on at one of three Pac-10 schools: UCLA, Stanford, and Arizona. He broke down his choices fairly succinctly, “Obviously, education wise, the strong point has to be with Stanford, the location area I want to be in is at UCLA, and the coaches are real at Arizona."The scouting report on Rice is similar to his fathers -- not blazing fast, but runs nice routes and has good hands. At the same point in the elder Rice’s career he was just a solid receiver in Mississippi that wasn’t good enough to get a major offer as well, so this could work out fairly well for all the parties involved.
