Report: Bob Stoops adds HBC Jr. to Sooners football staff

After spending more than a decade with one Hall of Famer, it appears Steve Spurrier Jr. is set to join a future Hall of Famer who also happens to be his former boss.

While Oklahoma has yet to announce his addition, the Oklahoman is reporting that Spurrier Jr. will join Bob Stoops’ football support staff with the Sooners. A specific title for Spurrier Jr. wasn’t detailed, although all nine of Stoops’ on-field coaching positions with the Sooners are filled.

When the move officially comes to fruition it will serve as a homecoming of sorts as he spent 1999-2001 as OU’s receivers coach. Those three seasons in Norman coincided with Stoops’ first three years heading the program. Spurrier Jr. also spent the 2004 season at Arizona under Mike Stoops, Bob’s brother and OU’s current defensive coordinator.

For the last 11 years, Spurrier Jr. was the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at South Carolina under his Hall of Fame father, who abruptly announced his retirement in the middle of the 2015 season.
