Report: Venables-to-Clemson rumors heat up, decision coming soon
Despite the general feeling from the Oklahoma camp that defensive coordinator Brent Venables will stay to once again share the coordinator title with Mike Stoops -- or, perhaps that’s just what OU wants us to believe -- rumors connecting Venables to another job continue to fly.Specifically, Venables has been linked to the open gig at Clemson with the news that Kevin Steele won’t return as DC. According to Dave Sittler of the Tulsa World, the Tigers aren’t looking to interview Venables; instead, they just want him to take the job, period.
“He is visiting with them,” a source said. “He’s not interviewing. They’re trying to get him.”
The sources couldn’t confirm reports that also had Venables meeting Friday night in San Antonio with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney before flying to the school Saturday.
It is known that Venables left Norman on Friday afternoon on what coach Bob Stoops said was a recruiting trip.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney had already made it known in a press conference that he had reached out to Venables. If Venables took the job with Clemson, they could reportedly pay him at least twice what he makes with the Sooners ($440,000). That could be more of an incentive for Venables than simply having to share the DC title with Stoops, which according to Sittler’s Twitter account, isn’t that big of a deal.
Regardless, a decision from Venables is expected by Sunday.
Wherever he ends up, it won’t be West Virginia. Venables did have an offer from the Mountaineers to replace Jeff Casteel, but has taken his name from consideration.
