If there is one thing you can count on South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier to do anytime he is being asked about just about anything, you can rest easy knowing he will likely find a way to jab the subject of his comment. Just ask Tennesse and Florida State about that. Or ask Georgia, the target of one of Spurrier’s latest comments.
Spurrier was sharing his reaction to one of his former players at Florida, Brian Schottenheimer, getting a job on the Georgia coaching staff earlier in the day as the new offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs. In one quick response, Spurrier asked why Schottenheimer would want to get into the college game after coaching in the NFL and quickly poked a stick at Georgia’s play in the SEC East over the last few seasons.
“That’s an excellent opportunity for any coach,” Spurrier said, according to The Telegraph in Macon, Georgia. “Georgia always has a whole bunch of good players. They probably have been the most consistent team in the East. Well, maybe they haven’t, heck we’ve beat them four out of five years, but overall they have probably been one of the best teams on the Eastern side.”
As Spurrier noted, South Carolina has won four of the last five meetings with Georgia, and the results of the games have tended to carry some significant weight in the SEC East race over that time. Had Georgia defeated South Carolina in 2014, the Bulldogs would have played for the SEC championship against Alabama. Instead, Missouri went on to play for the SEC title for a second straight season.
Classic Spurrier. It may not be his best work, but we’ll take it in the offseason.
