TCU unveils statues of Gary Patterson, Davey O’Brien and Dutch Meyer

On Saturday TCU unveiled three statues that, while all equally well deserving, arrived with some odd timing.

The men immortalized in bronze are Davey O’Brien, Dutch Meyer and Gary Patterson.

O’Brien won the 1938 Heisman Trophy, entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955 and passed away in 1977.

Meyer led the Horned Frogs to national championships in 1944 and ’51, left coaching in 1952, retired as TCU’s athletics director in 1963 and passed in 1982.

Why, exactly, did it take until 2016 for TCU to erect statues for them?

And Patterson, of course, is the father of modern TCU football. His 143 victories are the most in school history, he’s won or shared six conference championships spread across three separate conferences, booked a half-dozen top-10 finishes and won the Rose and Peach bowls. But he’s also 56 years old and still gainfully employed by TCU.

Why the rush to immortalize him now?

Either way, TCU statues are up, they’re real, and they’re spectacular.
