Texas Tech to reportedly use both quarterbacks in bowl

When Texas Tech takes on Northwestern in the TicketCity Bowl on Jan. 1, it’s likely both Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield will see snaps from under center.

Or, more likely, in the shotgun.

“I’d like to play both of them,” said coach Tommy Tuberville said to the Dallas Morning News. “But obviously, you want to go in with your first-team player, which would be Taylor Potts. Then, Steven Sheffield will be the second-team player. He has played some other positions, wide receiver positions.”

Tuberville also insisted that using both quarterbacks would allow Potts and Sheffield to enjoy their last game at Texas Tech.

“The thing I want to do is let all these seniors go out and enjoy themselves in a bowl game.... It’s the last year for most of them to ever put on a helmet to play football. So we want them to have a great experience. Not just the quarterbacks, but all the seniors.”

Potts was somewhat controversially named Texas Tech’s starter prior to the start of this season, but Sheffield has shared playing time as well. On the year, Potts has over 3,300 yards passing and Sheffield saw significant time this season against Texas A&M and Missouri.
