The initial reports that Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham “likely won’t play” in the opener have turned into Gresham won’t play in the opener against BYU, the Daily Oklahoman is reporting.
The preseason All-American suffered cartilage damage in his knee during practice this week.
There is no word yet on how long Gresham will be out. According to the paper, the medical staff is considering several different treatment options in an effort to get the TE back on the field as quickly as possible.
It’s uncertain whether surgery is one of those options.
As noted earlier, either sophomore James Hanna or sophomore walk-on Trent Ratterree will start in Gresham’s place. Combined, the duo have one career reception.
Gresham’s original backup, Brody Eldridge, was recently moved to center and is expected to start at that position Saturday.
Gresham was a huge piece of the Sooners’ offensive puzzle in 2008, and his absence will certainly be felt.
