One of the biggest reasons USC heavily pursued Silas Redd when he decided to transfer from Penn State was the paltry depth the Trojans had at the running back position.
A game into the 2012 season, the value of Redd’s addition to the roster is already paying big dividends in both performance and as far as the depth issue is concerned.
D.J. Morgan, who would’ve been USC’s No. 2 tailback were it not for Redd’s transfer, revealed on Twitter Wednesday morning that he will undergo what he termed “minor” knee surgery at some point today. The back’s prognosis for his return is 3-4 weeks.
Head coach Lane Kiffin subsequently confirmed the self-prognosis.
Morgan rushed for 25 yards in relief of Redd and Curtis McNeal in USC’s season-opening win over Hawaii last weekend. The injury did not occur during the opener; rather, it’s an issue that Morgan’s been dealing with throughout the summer, and it’s hoped that the arthroscopic procedure will clear up the ongoing problem.
