Cap Considerations

Caps After Auto Club

It seemed too good to be true, and ultimately Kyle Busch was unable to extend his career-record streak of top-fives. He came within two laps of earning a ninth straight result in that range, but a blown tire in the shade of the checkers forced the No. 18 to the pits and dropped him to 25th on the grid. There is only so much room at the top of the order and Busch lost 25 cents to give Kevin Harvick the sole honor of commanding the highest pay in NASCAR.com’s Fantasy Live game.

Kurt Busch had a generally bad weekend all around. He crashed in Saturday’s practice and was forced into a backup. That car didn’t really get up to speed either and was out of control early in the Auto Club 400. The No. 41 was run over from behind by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Both drivers spent significant amount of time outside the top 10 and lost 25 cents in value. Busch dropped to $27.25 after finishing 30th. Junior fell to $27 while also failing to crack the top 10.

The biggest loser in terms of value in the NASCAR.com Fantasy Live game was Clint Bowyer. Both the driver and team expected Bowyer to elevate their performance this season, but the chemistry has been off since Speedweeks. Bowyer has not even lived up to the standard set by Justin Allgaier in 2015 and his cap dropped $1 to $17.75. Even now he may be too expensive unless he can reverse fortunes on the coming short tracks. Martinsville Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, and Richmond International Raceway are drivers’ tracks and Bowyer could surprise a lot of fantasy owners.

Rookies make mistakes. Chase Elliott spun by himself at Daytona International Speedway and chose the wrong lane then piled into the No. 20 when Matt Kenseth crashed at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The No. 24 has had the ability to sweep the top 10, however, and even when they fail to earn single-digit results, they score enough points to make them extremely attractive. At $17.75 Elliott is still a bargain. So far in 2016, he has averaged 32.1 points per race, which is the 11th-best in the field. His cap has not yet caught up to the fast freshman and 20 drivers are currently more expensive.

It takes a while for cap managers to completely trust drivers. For the moment, AJ Allmendinger may well be the best value in the NASCAR.com Fantasy Live game because he is one of the top-15 drivers in terms of average points. In five races this year, Dinger has earned the 14th-most points with 26.1 per race, but can still be signed for a modest price of $13.75. Players who begin filling their rosters with mid-priced drivers will certainly want Allmendinger on their radar screen.

Jimmie Johnson has been an all or nothing driver this year. With victories at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway, he has challenged fantasy owners to accept this team’s strength. They also finished third in the Kobalt 400 at Vegas, but have not looked uniformly strong. On several occasions, the team faded in the middle of the afternoon and surged at the end. At Phoenix International Raceway, they missed the top 10 for the second time in the first four races and that keeps them from being one of the four most expensive drivers. Johnson hovers around the $27 mark for now and Martinsville is a track that has been kind in the past, but it is too soon to place-and-hold the No. 48.
