FanDuel is hosting their usual College Football Hail Mary Tournament on Saturday. The prize pool consists of $110,000 with $12,000 going to first place. It is $25 to enter.
The contest starts at noon ET.
I have outlined a tournament team below that I feel relatively confident in.
Enjoy, and good luck!
QB Cody Kessler – USC @ CAL (FanDuel Price: $8,000)
Kessler has been up and down this season, posting just 2 fantasy points against Washington earlier this month, then bouncing back for 26 FPts next game at Notre Dame. Which side will we see this Saturday? I’m willing to be Kessler’s “good side” will be on display, as Cal’s 107th ranked pass defense should help make that a reality. This should be a close, high-scoring, back-and-forth affair that screams upside for everyone involved.
RB Anthony Wales – WKU @ ODU (FanDuel Price: $7,500)
Western Kentucky checks in as 24 point favorites over Old Dominion, which means they’ll likely go into “run heavy” mode in the second half, trying to preserve their lead and chew some clock. That’s good news for Anthony Wales, who has been a monster since taking over WKU’s starting RB job. He was able to get into the end-zone against a tough LSU defense last week, churning out a sweet 259 total yards and 3 TDs one week prior. He has tremendous upside in this matchup.
RB Samaje Perine – OKLA @ KANS (FanDuel Price: $7,200)
Perine finally broke loose last week, amassing 200+ yards and 4 TDs vs Texas Tech. The matchup against Kansas is a good one, as Perine actually broke the NCAA single game rushing record against the Jayhawks last season. He likely won’t see the same volume as that phenomenal performance, but 15 or so carries should be in the cards before Oklahoma pulls the starters. Perine could rip off a few big gainers, holding a floor of 150 yards and 1-2 TDs. Of course, there’s room for more if they keep feeding him the ball.
WR JuJu Smith – USC @ CAL (FanDuel Price: $8,000)
Flash back to the Cody Kessler write-up: “This should be a close, high-scoring, back-and-forth affair that screams upside for everyone involved”. That quote certainly pertains to JuJu Smith, probably more than anyone else from either team. Smith has racked up five 100+ yard games this season, and this is one of his best matchups to date against a Cal pass defense that ranks 107th in the nation.
WR Kenny Lawler – CAL vs USC (FanDuel Price: $6,100)
On the other side of this Cal-USC matchup lies Kenny Lawler. California loves to pass the ball, and that should hold true now more than ever as they’ll try to keep pace with USC in this expected shootout. Lawler has been Cal’s most consistent wide receiver, hauling in 6 TD passes in the past five games. He has upside of 100+ yards, multiple touchdowns, and a heaping of targets in this matchup.
WR Artavis Scott – CLEM @ NCST (FanDuel Price: $6,100)
I’m expecting many people to overlook Scott, as he had just 1 reception for 7 yards last week at Miami. However, Clemson jumped out to an early lead (en route to a 58-0 win), not needing any production from the passing game. They won’t have that luxury at NC State this week, only favored by 10 points in this sneaky-good conference matchup. Scott should see plenty of work against an NC State defense that gave up 3 touchdowns to VaTech WR Isaiah Ford a few weeks ago. The Watson-Scott duo has been lethal this season when called upon, and I’m expecting to see it come to the forefront on Saturday.
TE George Kittle – IOWA vs MD (FanDuel Price: $2,000)
We are just hoping for a touchdown here. All of the tight ends with upside are too expensive within this slate, which would really cut into the rest of my lineup. That’s why I’m taking a chance with Kittle at minimum salary. He doesn’t see regular snaps for Iowa, but he is a viable red-zone threat, hauling in a TD pass in three of the past four games. He won’t get you anything more than that, but he is the best minimum salary tight end to hope for some fantasy production.
