When looking at bargains on FanDuel, we'll typically focus on hitters who are $3,200 or lower. In general, we'll only highlight players at the top end of that scale if they have star potential.
Please note, these player picks were organized early in the day. For MLB contests, always check lineups and weather closer to game time. Rain, wind, or unexpected managerial decisions could open up additional sources of value. Be sure to keep an eye on the MLB Headlines and Injuries desk. You can double check that your players are in the starting lineup by viewing our MLB Lineups page later in the day.
We are focusing on tonight’s main (five game) slate starting at 7:15 ET.
Now onto the bargain plays.
1 - George Springer – OF – Houston (FanDuel Price: $3,300)
Springer has been somewhat mediocre as of late, bringing his salary back within the bargain threshold. Tonight’s matchup against Baltimore southpaw Wade Miley (.352 wOBA, 1.43 HR/9 vs RHB) makes for a comfortable bounce-back situation. While Miley has been decent this season, facing this powerful, righty-heavy Houston lineup on the road makes for a tall task.
2 - Evan Gattis – C – Houston (FanDuel Price: $3,200)
I’m piggybacking the previous write-up by recommending Evan Gattis and his power hitting ways against LHP Wade Miley. Houston checks in with the top run scoring projection outside of Coors Field for the evening slate. That inspires several value prospects, and Gattis blends comfortably into your lineup at a catcher position that doesn’t have much opportunity cost.
3 - Joe Panik – 2B – San Francisco (FanDuel Price: $2,500)
When looking to stack the Cardinals and Rockies tonight, you’ll likely need some value fillers to make the salaries work. Panik is one of the better “per dollar” bats in that regard, likely hitting up in San Francisco’s order with plenty of lineup security. The matchup is decent as well, facing Atlanta RHP Michael Foltynewicz and his .367 wOBA, 1.74 HR/9 split vs left-handed hitters over the past few years.
4 - Gregory Polanco – OF – Pittsburgh (FanDuel Price: $3,200)
It was only a matter of time before Polanco returned to his fantasy-friendly form. He needed an adjustment period to shake off the rust, nursing an injury through the first two weeks of the season. It appears Polanco has found his groove, owning a five game hitting streak with a pair of homers and multi-hit performances. The matchup is mediocre against NYM pitcher Zack Wheeler, but the Pirates’ outfielder firmly belongs on your radar within this abbreviated slate.
5 - Lucas Duda – 1B – NY Mets (FanDuel Price: $2,700)
There’s plenty of opportunity cost at first base tonight. However, if you need salary relief away from the headliner picks (Carpenter, Reynolds, Rizzo, Belt), Lucas Duda may be your guy. He’s heating up with seven hits, three doubles, a homer, seven RBI, and four runs over the past four games. While Pittsburgh pitcher Gerrit Cole is decent overall, he carries an exploitable .347 wOBA vs left-handed hitters: something worth pursuing on this shorter slate.
Michael Foltynewicz – SP – Atlanta (FanDuel Price: $7,800)
If you need a cheaper pitching option for tournaments (helping to stack expensive bats), Foltynewicz could be the answer. He has posted quality starts in five of his past seven appearances. Starting in pitcher-friendly AT&T Park against a Giants team that ranks dead last in wRC+ vs right-handed hitters could help him out.
Kyle Schwarber – OF – Chicago Cubs (FanDuel Price: $3,200)
The matchup isn’t ideal against Brandon McCarthy, but Schwarber deserves consideration due to power-potential alone. The salary is respectable and Schwarber seems to be heating up over the past ten days.
Brandon Crawford – SS – San Francisco (FanDuel Price: $3,100)
The shortstop position is surprisingly deep for this abbreviated slate. However, if you are looking for a cheaper, yet solid compliment to Diaz, Story, Seager, etc – Crawford looks decent against Foltynewicz and his aforementioned .367 wOBA vs LHB over the past few years.
