FanDuel MLB Bargains: Sunday

by Spencer Limbach
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

When looking at bargains on FanDuel, we'll typically focus on hitters who are $3,200 or lower. In general, we'll only highlight players at the top end of that scale if they have star potential.

Please note, these player picks were organized early in the day. For MLB contests, always check lineups and weather closer to game time. Rain, wind, or unexpected managerial decisions could open up additional sources of value. Be sure to keep an eye on the MLB Headlines and Injuries desk. You can double check that your players are in the starting lineup by viewing our MLB Lineups page later in the day.

We are focusing on tonight’s main (nine game) slate starting at 1:07 ET.

Now onto the bargain plays.

1 - Corey Seager – SS – LA Dodgers (FanDuel Price: $3,200)

The Dodgers check in with a respectable (top five) run total in this slate. The hitter-friendly shift to Miller Park against Brewers’ RHP Zach Davies (.336 wOBA, 1.31 HR/9 vs LHB) are two key reasons. Seager is bargain priced and looking at an excellent situation to make some fantasy noise. He’s a premiere pick in all formats.

2 - Nicholas Castellanos – 3B – Detroit (FanDuel Price: $2,800)

Detroit is the highest projected run scoring team of this slate, so naturally we’ll look towards them for value. Castellanos has struggled at the dish this season, but three hits, two doubles, a homer, four runs, and four walks over his past three starts inspires confidence. The matchup against White Sox lefty David Holmberg doesn’t hurt either, as the southpaw carries a .406 wOBA, 2.79 HR/9 through 48 innings against right-handed hitters. Stack Detroit hitters accordingly.

3 - Andrew Benintendi – OF – Boston (FanDuel Price: $2,800)

Benintendi has gone cold as of late, but today calls for an excellent bounce-back opportunity. The Red Sox will face struggling Baltimore pitcher Chris Tillman, who has allowed nine earned runs and 16 hits over his past two starts (7.2 innings). Buying low with Benintendi is a plausible strategy this afternoon.

4 - Scott Schebler – OF – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $3,100)

Cincinnati hold the second highest run-scoring projection (behind Detroit) against Julio Teheran in hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark. Teheran has been generous to left-handed hitters over the past few seasons, holding a .344 wOBA, 1.59 HR/9 in that regard. While Joey Votto is obviously the first Cincinnati left-handed slugger that comes to mind, don’t forget about Schebler for this bargain salary.

5 - John Hicks – C – Detroit (FanDuel Price: $2,400)

There’s a good chance Hicks will start for Detroit against left-handed starter David Holmberg. That’s good news for his fantasy potential, racking up five hits, two homers, five RBI, and five runs over his past five starts. As mentioned earlier, Detroit is the highest projected run scoring team within this slate, and Holmberg has been very generous to right-handed power.

ALSO CONSIDER

Eric Thames – 1B – Milwaukee (FanDuel Price: $3,000)

Thames has cooled off following his impressive start, but that means he’s back in bargain territory. Dodgers’ pitcher Kenta Maeda is solid overall, but he doesn’t have overpowering stuff to mow down lineups. The shift to Miller Park could really hurt him, and Thames is a primary candidate to make that happen.

Brandon Phillips – 2B – Atlanta (FanDuel Price: $2,500)

There should be plenty of runs in this Atlanta-Cincinnati game. Reds LHP Amir Garrett is making his first start since landing on the disabled list a few weeks ago. He owns a 6.00 ERA after coughing up 13 earned runs in his past two starts combined. Atlanta and Mr. Brandon Phillips have the ability to further those struggles.

Maikel Franco – 3B – Philadelphia (FanDuel Price: $2,800)

Tournament only recommendation. Franco hasn’t done much as of late, but I can’t help keeping him in tournament consideration against San Francisco left-handed tosser Matt Moore. The veteran pitcher has gotten blown-up a few times this season, and Franco holds a capable .335 wOBA .203 ISO vs LHP to take advantage.

Dixon Machado – 2B – Detroit (FanDuel Price: $2,400)

Keep an eye on the Tigers’ lineup. If Machado is in the leadoff spot, he’ll enjoy excellent security to become a fantasy threat for the highest projected scoring team of this slate.
