FanDuel MLB Bargains: Tuesday

by Spencer Limbach
Updated On: October 4, 2018, 4:04 pm ET

When looking at “bargains” on FanDuel, we'll typically focus on hitters who are $3,200 or lower. In general, we'll only highlight players at the top end of that scale if they have star potential.

We are concentrating on the main slate today starting at 7:05 ET. There are 13 matchups within this timeframe, meaning I will rank the top ten value plays by priority to your lineups.

Please note, these player picks were organized early in the day. For MLB contests, always check lineups and weather closer to game time. Rain, wind, or unexpected managerial decisions could open up additional sources of value. Be sure to keep an eye on the MLB Headlines and Injuries desk. You can double check that your players are in the starting lineup by viewing our MLB Lineups page later in the day.

Now onto the bargain plays.

1 - Alex Rodriguez – 3B – NY Yankees (FanDuel Price: $3,000)

Say what you want about Alex Rodriguez, but he hits lefties pretty well. A-Rod holds a .378 wOBA and .205 ISO against left-handed pitching over the past three seasons, and he’s facing one of the worst pitchers on today’s slate – Oakland southpaw Eric Surkamp. In limited innings, Surkamp holds a .377 wOBA against right-handed hitters. Argue sample size all you want, but the bottom line revolves around a weak pitcher tossing in a hitter-friendly park. A-Rod and the Yankees should take advantage.

2 - Nomar Mazara – OF – Texas (FanDuel Price: $3,100)

Mazara has been very solid since getting called up last week. He’s batting 2nd for a Texas offense that checks in as one of the highest projected offenses against mediocre pitcher Scott Feldman. Mazara has accumulated six hits, three runs, and three RBI in the past three games, and there’s certainly room for more in tonight’s draw.

3 - Hunter Pence – OF – San Francisco (FanDuel Price: $3,300)

Pence is a beast, especially against left-handed pitching, where he holds a .348 wOBA and .205 ISO. That cross-references very well against Arizona’s mediocre pitcher Robbie Ray, who carries a .346 wOBA split against righties. Pence, Matt Duffy, and Buster Posey should all get in on the action tonight, making for a nice mini-stack.

4 - Brandon Phillips – 2B – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $2,800)

Phillips is one of the best “per dollar” second baseman in the player pool tonight. He has an appealing righty/lefty draw against Jorge De La Rosa (.339 wOBA vs RHB) in Cincinnati’s hitter friendly environment. Stacking Cincy right-handed bats (Phillips, Cozart, Suarez, Mesoraco) makes for a cheap, high-upside strategy.

5 - Prince Fielder – 1B – Texas (FanDuel Price: $3,000)

Fielder hasn’t been good to begin the season, but his price is incredibly low because of it. This could be the bounce-back spot we have been waiting for, stepping in against mediocre pitcher Scott Feldman. I already mentioned how Texas is projected as one of the highest projected scoring offenses of the night. I really like Fielder/Mazara as a 1-2 punch for my FanDuel lineups.

6 - Devin Mesoraco – C – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $2,700)

Take everything I mentioned earlier about Brandon Phillips and directly apply it to his teammate, Devin Mesoraco. Over the past three seasons, Mesoraco has held a respectable .368 wOBA against left-handed pitching, which cross-references very well with Jorge De La Rosa’s .339 wOBA allowed to righties.

7 - Hanley Ramirez – 1B – Boston (FanDuel Price: $2,900)

There’s a lot to like at first base tonight (Encarnacion, Teixeira, Fielder, Hosmer, etc), which is why HanRam is ranked lower in this article. However, we can’t forget about him, especially when assembling multiple tournament entries. Hanley holds an elite .228 ISO against left-handed pitching over the past three seasons, and Fenway Park only enhances his power-upside. He’s taking on Tampa lefty Drew Smyly (.331 wOBA vs RHB) this evening.

8 - Adonis Garcia – 3B – Atlanta (FanDuel Price: $2,300)

If you need a cheapie to spend up elsewhere but still want power, Garcia is your guy. He has upside in the cleanup spot for Atlanta, especially considering the righty/lefty matchup against erratic southpaw Alex Wood. Due to this, Garcia makes for a viable tournament pick, hovering on borderline cash game consideration as well.

9 - Cesar Hernandez – 2B – Philadelphia (FanDuel Price: $2,000)

Hernandez is minimum salary, batting leadoff, facing spot-starter Logan Verrett of the Mets. I like where this is going. Cesar is a solid contact hitter, fully capable of multiple hits, runs, and maybe a steal if we’re lucky. He’s a punt play to allocate salary to studs elsewhere, and there’s plausible upside to feel good about in the pick itself.

10 - Jeff Francoeur – OF – Atlanta (FanDuel Price: $2,000)

The aging Jeff Francoeur is a true punt-play tonight. Don't expect much out of him, but the situation is good enough to consider him for the absolute minimu. He's a platoon specialist reserved for stepping in against left-handed tossers. He'll have the same matchup otulined earlier with teammate Adonis Garcia, facing the erratic likes of former Atlanta Brave, Alex Wood
