When looking at “bargains” on FanDuel, we'll typically focus on hitters who are $3,200 or lower. In general, we'll only highlight players at the top end of that scale if they have star potential.
We are concentrating on the main slate”tonight, with games starting at 7:05 ET. There are nine matchups within this timeframe, meaning I will rank the top ten value plays by priority to your lineups.
Please note, these player picks were organized early in the day. For MLB contests, always check lineups and weather closer to game time. Rain, wind, or unexpected managerial decisions could open up additional sources of value. Be sure to keep an eye on the MLB Headlines and Injuries desk. You can double check that your players are in the starting lineup by viewing our MLB Lineups page later in the day.
Now onto the bargain plays.
1: Daniel Murphy – 2B – Washington (FanDuel Price: $3,100)
Murphy carried over his insanely good postseason into opening day, going 2-3 with a double, homer, and 2 RBI. There’s a chance he could keep mashing in this welcoming draw against Bud Norris and the Braves. First off, you’ll need to keep an eye on the weather to make sure this game even plays. If things look good on that front, safely plug Murphy into your lineup, as Atlanta pitcher Bud Norris holds a .361 wOBA and 1.37 HR/9 against left-handed hitters. Both are the worst splits among all probable pitchers tonight.
2: Jay Bruce – OF – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $3,100)
The Reds are projected as one of the top scoring offenses of the night. If we take a closer look at the matchups, it’s easy to see why. Philadelphia pitcher Aaron Nola carries over a .359 wOBA and 1.30 HR/9 rate against left-handed hitters from last season. That, plus a nice park factor in Cincy makes the Reds a team to target with Bruce and Votto especially.
3: Adam Jones – OF – Baltimore (FanDuel Price: $3,200)
The Orioles are projected as the highest scoring team of the night, as their powerful lineup settles in against mediocre pitcher Kyle Gibson. Jones is always a consistent, steady compliment to cash game lineups, and the price is very agreeable in this spot. The Baltimore center fielder had a double and 2 RBI in the season opener; more of the same is certainly within reason.
4: Khris Davis – OF – Oakland (FanDuel Price: $2,900)
Khris Davis, now a member of the Oakland A’s, has settled into a cleanup role for his new team. This is exactly the type of matchup to pursue his power, as he mashes left-handed pitching to the tune of .343 wOBA and .256 ISO. Davis will step in against Carlos Rodon of the White Sox, who currently holds an inflated .350 wOBA against right-handed hitters.
5: Danny Valencia – 3B – Oakland (FanDuel Price: $2,500)
Valencia is another Oakland right-handed hitter who could make a splash tonight. As I just mentioned, Carlos Rodon had trouble against righties last season, and Valencia holds a strong .365 wOBA against left-handed pitchers. Even though he disappointed last night, don’t count him out in a much better matchup this time around.
6: Gregory Polanco – OF – Pittsburgh (FanDuel Price: $3,300)
Polanco has been rollin’ to start the season, totaling 3 hits, double, triple, 2 RBI, 2 walks, and 4 runs over through the first pair of games. This is a nice spot to keep things going, considering a matchup against St. Louis pitcher Mike Leake, who holds a .332 wOBA vs left-handed hitters. Target with confidence in all formats!
7: Devin Mesoraco – C – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $2,400)
To be honest, the catcher position isn’t very good tonight. I’m looking towards value in Mesoraco, as he’s hitting in the meat of a Cincinnati lineup poised to put up some runs. He didn’t do much in the season opener, but Mesoraco has a track record of power, and he’ll be swinging in a hitter-friendly park … Josh Phegley is another cheap catcher I’m looking towards, sitting at $2,100 in a decent righty/lefty matchup.
8: Zack Cozart – SS – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $2,700)
I understand there are several intriguing top-end shortstops demanding attention tonight (Correa & Seager). However, if you need to save some cap space, or are looking to diversify with multiple tournament entries, don’t forget about Cozart. He’s batting first for a well-aligned Cincinnati team, fresh off a spectacular 3-3, two double, one run, one RBI performance on Monday. Cozart has very nice lineup security with Votto and Bruce behind him.
9: Kolton Wong – 2B – St. Louis (FanDuel Price: $2,500)
Wong is more of a “backup plan” to Daniel Murphy, in case the weather looks gloomy before lineups lock. The Cardinal second baseman finds himself in a decent situation tonight, facing pitcher Juan Nicasio and his .360 wOBA against left-handed hitters over the past few seasons. He’s an excellent part of a St. Louis stack (especially combined with Carpenter), or a fallback second baseman in cash games.
10a: Eduardo Escobar – SS – Minnesota (FanDuel Price: $2,600)
I fully understand there are plenty of good shortstops in action tonight, which is why I’m recommending Escobar as a tournament pick. He’ll likely bat 7th in the Twins’ order tonight, which should keep his ownership percentage very low. However, he has been swinging a very hot bat ever since the second half of last season, coming through with two doubles and a RBI at Baltimore on Monday. He has a nice draw in a hitter-friendly park against Baltimore pitcher Yovani Gallardo’s .334 wOBA vs lefties last season.
10b: John Jaso – 1B – Pittsburgh (FanDuel Price: $2,500)
I would recommend trying to work Votto or Adrian Gonzalez into your cash lineup at first base. However, if you don’t have the necessary funds, or are looking to diversify in tournaments, Jaso is a satisfying cheap pick. He has an intriguing matchup against Mike Leake, who has allowed a .332 wOBA against left-handed hitters. Jaso should be leading of tonight for the Buccos.
Miguel Sano – OF – Minnesota (FanDuel Price: $3,300)
Eddie Rosario – OF – Minnesota (FanDuel Price: $2,500)
Chase Utley – 2B – LA Dodgers (FanDuel Price: $2,600)
Eugenio Suarez – 3B – Cincinnati (FanDuel Price: $2,700)
Josh Phegley – C – Oakland (FanDuel Price: $2,100)
