Below, I will list my FanDuel NBA Pivots away from the conventional, popular selections. Within each write-up, I’ll explain why that player is underrated and how you should approach them during lineup construction. These picks are meant to be utilized as leverage situations in large-field tournaments.
Best of luck!
Pivot: D.J. Augustin – Orlando (FanDuel Price: $3,700)
I’m thinking most people will go with Andrew Harrison or Matthew Dellavedova when looking for a cheap point guard. Don’t forget about Augustin, who has been starting for Orlando as of late. He has been very efficient in a 25-minute role, hitting 21 and 22 FP respectively over the past two. While the matchup at Memphis looks grueling on paper, remember that Mike Conley isn’t available to lock down opposing point guards.
Pivot: Wesley Matthews – Dallas (FanDuel Price: $4,700)
You can look towards Wesley Matthews or Eric Gordon as a sneaky cheap pick that will likely slip through the cracks. Matthews has been asked to carry a larger offensive load with backcourt injuries and the absence of Dirk Nowitzki. That could be the case even more tonight, as Seth Curry is currently questionable as well. Matthews always sees heavy minutes, and that has translated to 28 and 35 FP respectively over the past two. I don’t mind the matchup against a Charlotte team that ranks 22nd in defensive efficiency against opposing shooting guards.
Pivot: Trevor Ariza – Houston (FanDuel Price: $5,200)
Most people will be looking towards the expensive (Durant, LeBron) or dirt-cheap (Williams, Beasley) picks at small forward. That will leave Ariza with a very low ownership rate in between them. He’s capable of posting some upside within this high-scoring game. However, there’s also some risk that Ariza will defer to other shooters, making for a wide range of outcomes on a game-to-game basis.
Pivot: Serge Ibaka – Orlando (FanDuel Price: $6,300)
I’m thinking the crowd will either go with Jabari Parker for a similar salary, or dig a little deeper with Kaminsky or JaMychal Green. Ibaka has been surprisingly good as of late, befitting from increased usage in the refined starting lineup. Serge has hit 32+ fantasy points in three straight, and I wouldn’t be intimidated by a matchup against an injury-plagued Memphis frontcourt.
Pivot: John Henson – Milwaukee (FanDuel Price: $4,200)
The emergence of Salah Mejri probably starting for Andrew Bogut (ruled out) will carry swarms of ownership his way. That will leave Henson with a very low contingency, despite carrying realistic upside in an excellent matchup. Henson has posted 38 and 25 fantasy points respectively in the past two games. His opponent, the Brooklyn Nets, rank 25th in rebound rate and 29th in defensive efficiency against opposing centers.
