FanDuel is hosting a MEGA $1.5 Million NFL Tournament starting 1:00 ET on Sunday. It’s $25 to enter, and the winner gets a sweet payout of $300,000.
Here’s my tournament lineup for that contest, outlining some of my favorite players and some strategy tips along the way. Just a disclaimer that this article was written on Saturday morning, so beware of injury developments between that time and kickoff.
Best of luck!
QB Cam Newton – Carolina (FanDuel Price: $8,300)
As mentioned in other articles, I like Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck as cash game quarterbacks. However, I also like the prospect of getting Cam Newton at a lower ownership rate on Sunday. The Panthers are coming off a bye, so hopefully Newton is healthy and ready to resume his high-upside ways. Arizona’s defense has been tough this season, but Cam is certainly capable of making big plays to churn out a 30+ FP performance.
RB Jacquizz Rodgers – Tampa Bay (FanDuel Price: $6,600)
There are a ton of viable running backs this weekend, but I’m looking towards value and spending up elsewhere. Rodgers has been a volume monster over the past few weeks, racking up 35 and 27 total touches respectively. That has translated to some solid fantasy outings, and I’m expecting it to continue against an Oakland defense that ranks 28th against the run.
RB Devontae Booker – Denver (FanDuel Price: $5,600)
Booker may be one of the more popular picks of the week, but that doesn’t curb my enthusiasm in tournaments. I’m content with utilizing his value despite the likely high ownership rate. Booker should see 20+ carries with C.J. Anderson sidelined. The rookie from Utah has posted a solid yard per carry rate this season, and the extra volume should translate to fantasy viability. The matchup against San Diego isn’t bad either, especially considering he ripped them for 46 yards on five carries in their last meeting. Imagine what he can do with 20+ attempts.
WR Mike Evans – Tampa Bay (FanDuel Price: $7,900)
Evans will likely be popular this week as well. Despite being an absolute monster over the past few weeks, his salary actually decreased $100. His price should be more in line with Julio Jones’ $9200 mark, but I’ll gladly take the discount against an Oakland defense that ranks dead last against the pass.
WR T.Y. Hilton – Indianapolis (FanDuel Price: $7,800)
The Chiefs rank middle-of-the-pack against the pass, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. They have struggled against above-average quarterbacks this season, most notably getting toasted by Ben Roethlisberger and Drew Brees as of late. They rank tied for last in sacks, which suggest Andrew Luck will have enough time to let the deep ball fly. To make matters better, Hilton will likely run majority of his routes against cornerbacks not named Marcus Peters. Feel free to fire up the league’s leader in targets.
WR Davante Adams – Green Bay (FanDuel Price: $6,600)
I like Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ wide receivers this week. Their absence of a running game creates some inherent upside, and Adams responded with 13 catches on 16 targets for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns last week. Am I expecting a repeat performance? Not exactly. However, I believe Adams could be a fantasy force in some way, shape, or form. This game has shootout potential between two viable offenses. Randall Cobb is questionable, potentially being limited even if he does play. Jordy Nelson doesn’t look like himself, and he’ll draw coverage against CB Desmond Trufant. That leaves Adams with a good matchup as the healthiest pass catching option on a pass-heavy team.
TE Greg Olsen – Carolina (FanDuel Price: $7,400)
Most people may be looking value at tight end, which isn’t a bad strategy. However, this is where I’m differentiating from the pack, looking towards the Newton-Olsen combination. I already mentioned how Arizona’s defense has been solid this season, and that extends to limiting tight ends as well. However, Olsen is still the top pass catcher within this offense, and he has flexed upside with three 19+ fantasy point performances this season. The Cardinals haven’t faced an offense like Carolina this season, and I’m thinking this is the week their defense gets exposed (much like the 33-18 loss at Buffalo earlier this season).
K Matt Bryant – Atlanta (FanDuel Price: $4,800)
Bryant is an accurate kicker at a moderate price taking part in the highest projected scoring game of the week. He’s playing in a dome as well. No further analysis needed.
DEF Denver Broncos (FanDuel Price: $5,000)
Denver’s defense is one of the best in the league, and probably the best of this slate (with Minnesota playing on Monday night). They are at home facing Philip Rivers and a San Diego offense that tends to struggle outside the state of California. You better believe the Broncos will be looking for payback after losing in San Diego two weeks ago.
