We have a rare busy Friday night in the National Hockey League with seven games scheduled. With the NBA All-Star break here, we should see an increase in hockey action this evening. The Detroit Red Wings are by far the biggest favorites on the board tonight, and we have four teams (Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, Colorado Avalanche and the Calgary Flames) playing on the tail end of a back-to-back set.
Editor's Note: This is your chance to try FanDuel risk free! Sign up today and if you lose your first contest, you’ll be refunded the entry fee up to $10. Play now.
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders NHL Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Petr Mrazek, Detroit Red Wings, $9,500 – Mrazek has been terrific all season long for the Detroit Red Wings (1.94 GAA, .934 SV%, 4 SO). He has won his last three starts (stopping 73 of the 75 shots he faced), including a shutout over the Florida Panthers. There may not be a ton of save upside for the 23-year-old Czech goaltender in this game, but he is a lock for the win. Look for the Red Wings to dominate this game from puck drop and for Mrazek to cruise to a victory.
Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins, $10,200 – If you are paying up for any one player tonight in your cash games, that player should be Sidney Crosby. Sid the Kid is sizzling hot, generating seven goals and 12 points in his last five hockey games. The Carolina Hurricanes will have no answer for Crosby tonight and I see a multi-point game in his future.
Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames, $8,500 – Gaudreau is coming off a multi-point performance in San Jose last night and he is in a great spot to produce again this evening. As predicted in this article, the Arizona Coyotes and Louis Domingue have come crashing down to Earth, after a strong start to the season. The Desert Dogs have lost five straight contests, allowing a whopping 23 goals against in the process. Johnny Hockey has hat-trick upside tonight against the defensively challenged Coyotes in the desert.
Henrik Zetterberg, Detroit Red Wings, $6,800 - As the National Hockey League’s worst team at driving play, the Colorado Avalanche continue to give away scoring chances like candy on Halloween. Making matters worse, the Avalanche are playing their second game in as many nights and will likely have their backup goaltender in net. Zetterberg is starting to heat up offensively and he has big potential tonight in this plus matchup on home ice.
Brendan Gallagher, Montreal Canadiens, $5,800 - Despite being on the road, the Montreal Canadiens are decent sized favorite tonight. The Buffalo Sabres are not only playing in back-to-back games, but they have dropped four straight decisions, allowing 17 goals along the way. Gallagher has recorded multi-point games in two of his last three contests and remains the best bang for your buck on the Habs offense.
Other Wingers to Target (Cash Games) – Steven Stamkos, Patric Hornqvist, Vladimir Tarasenko, Justin Abdelkader, James Neal, Nikita Kucherov
Other Wingers to Target (Tournaments) – Alex Galchenyuk, Mats Zuccarello, Elias Lindholm, Dylan Larkin, Gustav Nyquist, Jaden Schwartz, Mikkel Boedker
Brendan Smith, Detroit Red Wings, $3,300 – In order to pay up for stars like Sidney Crosby and Johnny Gaudreau, we need to find some salary relief. With the injuries to Niklas Kronwall and Mike Green, Smith has become the Red Wings’ power play quarterback, and he has huge potential in this prime matchup tonight. Dollar for dollar, Smith is the top play on the blue line this evening.
Other Defensemen to Target (Cash Games) – P.K. Subban, Kris Letang, Mark Giordano, Shea Weber, Anton Stralman
Other Defensemen to Target (Tournaments) – Justin Faulk, Rasmus Ristolainen, Andrei Markov, Jake Muzzin, Kris Russell, Derrick Pouliot, Noah Hanifin
