It is another quiet Monday night of NHL action with only three games on the schedule, but what else are you doing tonight? We might as well be playing some daily fantasy hockey to make the games much more enjoyable.
The Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks are the big favorites on the night, so we should start with those teams when building our cash game lineup. However, in tournaments, you may want to go contrarian, or even get a piece of all six teams playing.
GOALTENDERS
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders NHL Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Antti Niemi, Dallas Stars, $8,800 - The Dallas Stars are the biggest favorites on the board, and that means Antti Niemi is the top option in goal. The Toronto Maple Leafs are far from an offensive threat, ranking 28th in goals per game (2.00), and Niemi should have no problem shutting the door on them tonight. Don’t get cute in your cash games; Niemi is the play. If Kari Lehtonen gets the call, play him with confidence and enjoy the discount.
Other Goalies To Target (Cash Games) – Corey Crawford
Other Goalies To Target (Tournaments) – Jonathan Quick, Jonathan Bernier, Ryan Miller, Steve Mason
CENTERS
Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars, $8,600 - This play is simply a no brainer. Seguin has been a monster this season (5 G, 16 PTS, 46 SOG, 11 GP) and I expect him to have another big night at the Air Canada Centre this evening. The Toronto Maple Leafs have now lost six games in a row and have allowed the third-most goals in the NHL (3.30 goals per game) this season. If you are thinking of fading Seguin tonight in your cash games, you need to find another hobby.
Other Centers to Target (Cash Games) – Jeff Carter, Jonathan Toews, Henrik Sedin
Other Centers to Target (Tournaments) – Jason Spezza, Nazem Kadri, Anze Kopitar, Artem Anisimov
WINGERS
Daniel Sedin ($7,000) and Radim Vrbata ($6,600), Vancouver Canucks - It is still early in the season, but it appears the Philadelphia Flyers are not a very good hockey club and that we should be targeting offenses against them. The Flyers have lost three straight games, allowing 11 goals against in the process. Sedin and Vrbata are both riding three-game point streaks and are showing good chemistry together. Both snipers shoot a ton and have multi-goal upside in this matchup.
Artemi Panarin, Chicago Blackhawks, $3,400 - Lock and load Panarin in your cash games. The matchup versus the Los Angeles Kings is not ideal, but it just doesn’t make sense to fade him. Panarin has ten points in 11 games and plays with Patrick Kane at both even strength and on the Blackhawks’ top power-play unit. Not to mention, he allows you a ton of salary relief at his ridiculously low price.
Other Wingers to Target (Cash Games) – Jamie Benn, Patrick Sharp, Tyler Toffoli, Patrick Kane
Other Wingers to Target (Tournaments) – Cody Eakin, James van Riemsdyk, Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds
DEFENSE
John Klingberg, Dallas Stars, $5,600 - You may have guessed that I am high on the Dallas Stars tonight. Klingberg has looked fantastic this year with 11 points in his first 11 games, including four power play points. Toronto has an awful penalty kill, and you can bet Klingberg will find his way onto the score-sheet tonight.
Other Defensemen to Target (Cash Games) –Drew Doughty, Brent Seabrook, Mark Streit
Other Defensemen to Target (Tournaments) – Jake Muzzin, Morgan Rielly, Yannick Weber
