We kick off Christmas week with a rare and fantastic eight-game schedule on this Monday evening. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators are tonight’s biggest favorites, and the Washington Capitals are the only team playing on consecutive days.
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders NHL Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche, $9,800 – Varlamov is playing his best hockey of the season right now. He has won his last six starts, never allowing more than two goals in any game. The Russian tender has been nearly unbeatable in the month of December (1.12 GAA, .967 SV%, 1 SO). The Toronto Maple Leafs lack scoring punch, but they shoot the puck plenty, and we know the Avs will give up shots, so Varlamov should not only win, but also make a healthy number of saves in this one. Lock and load.
Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers, $3,800 - The Winnipeg Jets have really struggled away from home (6-10-1) and the Edmonton Oilers have been extremely good on home ice (9-5-1) this season. I expect Edmonton’s top line to have plenty of scoring chances tonight against this undisciplined Jets squad. Draisaitl has put up impressive numbers in an Oilers uniform and he should easily find the score-sheet in this game. Dollar for Dollar, Draisaitl is my top center this evening.
Vladimir Tarasenko, St. Louis Blues, $8,100 - How can we not roster Tarasenko in our cash games tonight? The Russian phenom has now scored in five consecutive games and has registered a total of nine points in those five contests. He is as safe as they come and I expect him to snipe another one this evening in this plus matchup.
Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado Avalanche, $7,100 - Landeskog and his linemates are in a great spot to produce tonight. The Colorado Avalanche are on fire, winning five in a row and eight of their past ten games. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs remain one of the NHL’s weakest defensive teams. Landeskog does his best work at the Pepsi Center (15 PTS in 13 GP) and I expect him to stay hot in this one.
Filip Forsberg ($7,900) and James Neal ($6,300), Nashville Predators - The Montreal Canadiens are a mess right now. The injuries to Brendan Gallagher and more importantly Carey Price are really taking their toll of late. The Habs are 2-7-1 in their past ten games, including three straight losses in which they have allowed 12 goals against. As the Nashville Predators’ two biggest scoring threats, Neal and Forsberg make great choices in your cash game lineup tonight.
Justin Schultz, Edmonton Oilers, $4,000 - It is rare we have a value defenseman who seems cash worthy. However, with the Winnipeg Jets in town, the Oilers power-play quarterback is exactly that. The Jets continue to lead the National Hockey League in penalty minutes per game and they own the league’s worst penalty kill. Look for Schultz to break through with the man advantage tonight.
