FanDuel NHL Plays - Sunday

Sunday is normally football day across the daily fantasy industry, but once lineups lock, the true DFS grinder looks for something more. That’s where the NHL comes in, as they present up with a nice six-game slate today which starts at 5pm EST. This works out great for most of us, as once that Panthers/Rams game gets boring enough, we can switch over to the NHL for the rest of the night. FanDuel has a healthy selection of contests this afternoon, so without any further rambling from me, let’s take a look at what players make sense to fit onto your roster this afternoon.

Goaltenders

Jimmy HowardDetroit Red Wings - $8,400 – The Edmonton Oilers come into this one fresh off a 4-3 shootout win against the New York islanders in Brooklyn last night. While that is a good thing, it’s worth noting that this is Edmonton’s third game in four nights, all of which have been on the road. Meanwhile, Detroit has been busy losing their last four games with only one of them seeing Howard in net, a 1-0 loss at home against Boston eight days ago. Howard has been stellar in his three starts so far this season and even played well in relief of Peter Mrazek against the Panthers when he came in and stopped 13 of 14 shots in the Wings 5-2 loss. Only three goals in 113 shots have gotten behind Howard, so look for him and Detroit to come away with the win here against a tired Edmonton squad.

Top Goaltender of the Night: Henrik Lundqvist – New York Rangers - $9,100

Centers

Rickard Rakell – Anaheim Ducks - $5,100 – Rakell returned to the Ducks lineup three games ago and has virtually been unstoppable by netting three goals and assisting on three others. There is some concern about whether or not Ryan Getzlaf will return to the lineup tonight, but that should be of no concern to you, as the Ducks take on the hapless Calgary Flames. Even if Getzlaf returns, there’s no doubt that Rakell will see a lot of minutes when the team has the man advantage, which means more ice time. The bonus here is the fact that the Flames have given up a goal while short-handed in four of their last five games. Play him while he’s hot.

Top Center of the Night: Tyler SeguinDallas Stars - $8,000

Center to Avoid: It may not be worth it to pay up for Connor McDavid tonight, as the Oilers are starting to look like a one-line team, and by being on the road, Detroit can try to match their best defensive line against the budding superstar.

Wingers

Michael Frolik – Calgary Flames - $5,000 – I know what you’re thinking. Why is this guy featuring a second line player from a team that he just blasted for being the worst team in the league? One of the reasons is that the Flames do score some goals, 35 to be exact, and Frolik leads the whole crew with five goals and nine points. Now I am not going to be an idiot and say play Frolik in all formats, but he does make a nice one-off play in cash games, and he also makes an especially good GPP play today. The Ducks will no doubt have their top defensive line on Johnny Gaudreau which would give Frolik a little more room on the ice to maneuver. Another reason he is featured is that anyone can tell you to play Patrick Kane, Vladimir Tarasenko and Corey Perry, who are all top plays tonight, but you already know that. My goal is to make you, the reader, think. Hopefully it’s working.

Jeff SkinnerCarolina Hurricanes- $6,800 – Skinners FanDuel price has escalated a bit over the last few weeks, but that will happen when you score five goals and add another five assists over the last six games. Carolina hosts the New Jersey Devils tonight, and if Cory Schneider were between the pipes, I’d be a little more worried. Since Keith Kinkaid is the New Jersey net minder, I have no problem with firing up Skinner tonight, as he has 35 shots while leading the team in scoring with 12 points in their first nine games.

Defensemen

Ryan McDonagh – New York Rangers - $5,200 – After pointing in eight straight games, McDonagh has hit a two-game stretch where he has only had two shots on goal. The Rangers are the first team to hit the 50-goal mark, and there’s no reason to think that they don’t score tonight against a Winnipeg team that is playing their third road game in four nights. McDonagh continues to man the point on the team’s top power play unit, so look for a point or two from him tonight.

Cam Fowler – Anaheim Ducks - $4,400 – I like Fowler tonight for some of the same reasons I stated in the Rickard Rakell capsule above. Calgary gives up goals while at even strength and being short-handed, which plays right into the theory of playing Fowler here. Through 12 games Fowler has four goals and four assists with all but a goal and an assist coming with the man advantage. He is emerging as the offensive player that the Ducks hoped he’d be when they drafted him in the first round back in 2010.

Top Defenseman of the Night: Duncan Keith – Chicago Blackhawks - $5,900
