We have another huge slate with nine games of National Hockey League action on this Thursday evening. The Philadelphia Flyers and San Jose Sharks are your biggest favorites, and the Ottawa Senators are the only team playing on consecutive nights.
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders NHL Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Cam Talbot, Edmonton Oilers, $7,200 – I am not in love with any cash game goalie on tonight’s nine-game slate, so I plan to get a little salary relief at the position. The Toronto Maple Leafs are playing their worst hockey of the season right now, losing 13 of their last 17 games. Despite firing over 34 shots per game in February, Toronto is still having difficulties scoring goals. Considering the Edmonton Oilers are allowing over 31 shots against per game on the year, Talbot should see plenty of rubber in this matchup. Look for a win and at least 25 saves from Talbot tonight, easily paying off his inexpensive salary.
Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers, $6,900 – Not sure what to think of all this Connor McDavid hype? Well, it’s time to buy in and drink the Kool Aid. The wunderkind is absolutely legit. I am not sure there is anyone in the league that can slow this kid down and there certainly isn’t anyone on the Toronto Maple Leafs that's capable. The Maple Leafs are playing lousy hockey lately, and the Oilers should dominate this game. Look for Connor McJesus to run rampant on this weak Maple Leafs squad tonight.
Joe Pavelski, San Jose Sharks, $8,200 – Pavelski is one of those rare players that brings a high floor and high ceiling to the table on a nightly basis. The Wisconsin native is not only the Sharks’ most consistent scorer, but he is also seventh in both goals and points in the NHL this season. The Calgary Flames have tightened things up of late, but don’t be fooled, this is not a good team on the back end. The Flames remain a poor possession team, which has led them to the bottom third of the NHL in many defensive categories, including scoring chances against, high danger scoring chances allowed and goals against per game. Pavelski has hat-trick upside in this plus matchup on home ice.
Mike Hoffman, Ottawa Senators, $5,800 – Hoffman has been quiet of late, but I expect that to change tonight with the Colorado Avalanche in town. The Avalanche remain the worst possession team in the game and they give up scoring chances at an alarming rate. Unless Semyon Varlamov steals the show, Hoffman and the Senators’ fifth-ranked offense should have a productive night.
Andrej Sekera, Edmonton Oilers, $3,700 - I absolutely love Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns tonight, however we may not need to roster them both in our cash games. The Edmonton Oilers offense is in a great spot to produce tonight, and I see no reason to pay up for both defensemen when we can roster their power play quarterback at a bargain basement price of $3,700. Sekera is easily the best bang for your buck on the blue line this evening.
