Tuesday was a crazy night of hockey action and I am hoping some of that excitement carries over into tonight’s games. It is a typically slow Wednesday in the NHL, with only four games on the docket. If you are a diehard hockey fan though, you are not worried that there are only eight teams in play tonight. As long as there are NHL games, we will be building lineups. The Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings are all home favorites and should be popular in both your cash games and your tournament play.
GOALTENDERS
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings, $8,800 – Quick and the Kings have a plus matchup versus the Devils at home tonight. Los Angeles is a very strong home team (15-5-4) and Quick has posted great numbers at the Staples Center this season (2.14 GAA, .923 SV%). I am aware of Quick’s recent struggles, but I don’t care. Quick is one of the best goalies in the world and he will be just fine. The Devils are not a strong road team (8-14-2) and they sit 28th overall in goals scored per game (2.14). New Jersey lacks offensive punch and are certainly not an offense to fear. I fully expect Quick to bounce back tonight and be the top goalie of the night. Play him with confidence.
Editor’s Note – If Martin Jones starts, that’s perfectly fine. I feel just as confident in him.
Other Goalies To Target (Cash Games) – Frederik Andersen, Braden Holtby
Other Goalies To Target (Tournaments) – Sergei Bobrovksy, Carey Price, Jonathan Bernier
CENTER
Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings, $7,600 – Kopitar remained hot with another multi-point performance against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night. Kopitar has three multi-point games in his last four and a total of eight points over that stretch. The Kings have loaded up their first line with Marian Gaborik, Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter, and this trio is really clicking. The Devils don’t have a checking line or a defensive pairing that can handle this talented line and I expect them to have another big night.
Other Centers To Target (Cash Games) – Ryan Getzlaf, Nicklas Backstrom, Jeff Carter, Claude Giroux
Other Centers To Target (Tournaments) – Ryan Johansen, Tyler Bozak
LEFT WING
Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals, $9,400 – Ovechkin has scored in six of his last seven games and continues to lead the NHL in shots on goal. Ovi is one of the most dangerous snipers in the league and he has “hat trick” upside on a nightly basis. The Flyers are not a strong defensive unit, ranking in the bottom third of the league in both shots against and goals against per game. Philadelphia also has the NHL’s worst penalty kill, and Ovechkin and the Capitals do a lot of their damage on the powerplay. (4th best powerplay in the league). It’s another good night to pay up for the “Great Eight”.
Other Left Wingers To Target (Cash Games) – Marian Gaborik, Patrick Maroon
Other Left Wingers To Target (Tournaments) – Max Pacioretty, Marcus Johansson, James van Riemsdyk,
RIGHT WING
Corey Perry, Anaheim Ducks, $9,200 – The dynamic duo of Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf is one of the most consistent and explosive scoring tandems in the league. The Ducks are an elite team and one of the league’s best on home ice (15-5-3). The Maple Leafs have lost seven of their last ten games and are not a team that travels well. Toronto sits in the bottom third of the league in almost every defensive category and I expect the Ducks to take advantage of that tonight. Look for a multi-point night from the NHL’s best power forward.
Other Right Wingers To Target (Cash Games) – Jakub Voracek
Other Right Wingers To Target (Tournaments) – Phi Kessel, Troy Brouwer, Nick Foligno
DEFENSE
Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings, $5,100 – Doughty has points in four of his last five games and I think he adds to those totals this evening against New Jersey. Doughty logs almost 30 minutes per game and quarterbacks the Kings’ top powerplay unit. Doughty is one of the best defensemen in the game and he is in a great spot to produce here. I expect Doughty and the Kings to dominate this game from the get-go, making Drew a great choice on defense this evening.
Other Defensemen To Target (Cash Games) – Mike Green, Sami Vatanen, Jake Muzzin
Other Defensemen To Target (Tournaments) – James Wisniewski, P.K. Subban, Cody Franson
