Each day I will be providing my recommended player picks for your FanDuel daily fantasy hockey lineups. The goal is to help you build the optimal cash game (50/50s/double-ups/head-to-head) lineup.
We are half way through the week and the National Hockey League presents us with a solid four-game slate. The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals are your biggest favorites tonight and we have two teams (Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks) playing on consecutive nights. Without many stand-out options, it should be a very interesting night in all formats.
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders NHL Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers, $9,000 – The New York Rangers are by far the biggest favorite on the board tonight and Henrik Lundqvist is the top dog in goal. The 34-year-old Swede is one of the NHL’s elite netminders and he is the safest option in your cash games lineups. Facing a banged up Bruins squad playing in back-to-back games, I think we see Lundqvist and the Rangers cruise to an easy victory this evening.
Other Top Play: Braden Holtby (WSH)
Top Value Play: Al Montoya (MTL)
Mika Zibanejad, New York Rangers, $6,000 - The Boston Bruins were embarrassed last night on home ice by the Minnesota Wild, and their sub-par goaltending was the biggest reason why. The Wild buried five goals against rookies Malcolm Subban and Zane McIntyre. With Tuukka Rask and Anton Khudobin still out due to injury, the New York Rangers will get to feast on one of these rookies tonight. The very reasonably priced Zibanejad is off to a great start (6 PTS and 19 SOG in 6 GP) and I think he remains hot in this one.
Top Overall Play: John Tavares (NYI)
Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals, $8,400 - Alexander Ovechkin is not only my top winger, he is the top play on the night period. The “Great Eight” has started to come alive offensively, scoring goals in three consecutive contests while adding 13 shots on net. The Edmonton Oilers have been playing much better defensively of late, but this is still a team we can target. Look for at least a goal and five shots on net tonight from the game’s best goal scorer.
Brendan Gallagher, Montréal Canadiens, $6,300 – Led by Brendan Gallagher, the Montréal Canadiens’ top line has been outstanding to start the season. The Canadiens lead the league in goals per game (3.83) and their number one line is the biggest reason why. Although the New York Islanders have been fine in 2016-17, this is a team I think we can pick on from time to time. The Islanders struggled with puck possession during the 2015-16 campaign, which led to the second-most scoring chances allowed in the National Hockey League. Look for Gallagher to score again tonight for the third straight game.
Ryan McDonagh, New York Rangers, $5,100 – The Blue Shirts’ captain has five points in his last four contests and he is one of the very few moderately priced options on defense tonight. The Boston Bruins have taken the fifth-most minor penalties this season, which is never a good thing when you have below average goaltending. At the very least, we should see McDonagh break through with the man advantage.
