NFL GPP Pivots: Week 17

Welcome to the NFL GPP Pivots article, where we’ll be looking to uncover some sneaky-good DFS plays away from the popular lifts. These recommendations are usually risk/reward commodities meant to be used in large-field tournaments. Typically, blending these low-owned hidden gems with well-aligned staples contributes to a viable GPP strategy.

Keep in mind that the following player write-ups were constructed earlier in the week, and sometimes injury situations can alter the fantasy landscape. Monitoring our NFL News & Headlines Feed up until game time will keep you in the loop while giving you the subsequent DFS consequences of each information piece.

We will be looking at Sunday’s main 15-game slate.

Kirk Cousins - Minnesota (at Detroit) - DK: $6,300 FD: $7,700 Yahoo: $34

Cousins is an irritating fantasy play who often cedes production to RB Dalvin Cook. Well, Cook is not playing this week, so Cousins might control more opportunities, especially in the red-zone. It just so happens that the matchup is extraordinary as well, given that Detroit has allowed the most fantasy points to QBs all season. Besides, it would be especially “on-brand” for Cousins to pad his numbers in a meaningless game. Seriously though, the Minnesota QB makes for an interesting tournament asset in this plum draw.

Also Consider: Cam Newton

David Johnson - Houston (vs. Tennessee) - DK: $6,800 FD: $7,300 Yahoo: $21

Johnson was listed in last week’s article, and he came through with 27 fantasy points vs. Cincinnati. His salary has spiked and the matchup is tougher this time around vs. Tennessee. However, Johnson should be involved regardless of game flow, as he has produced as a runner (20-155-1) and receiver (14-117-1) over his last two games. It’s clear that the Texans need him as a playmaker, especially with backup RB Duke Johnson (questionable) banged-up.

Darrel Williams - Kansas City (vs. LA Chargers) - DK: $4,800 FD: $5,800 Yahoo: $20

Let’s put an asterisk next to this one. The Chiefs have secured home-field advantage, and they will be resting many of their starters. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is out, and Le’Veon Bell (questionable) will probably join him on the sidelines while battling a knee injury. That leaves Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson to handle the RB duties for Kansas City. Williams played in 70% of the snaps last week (CEH out), so he’s set up pretty well for Sunday’s game. However, there are questions as to whether he’ll be scaled back as well. That would create volume for Thompson, who is significantly cheaper. Perhaps we’ll get some insight into Kansas City’s plans before kickoff, but we can consider both Williams and Thompson interesting tournament plays on this slate. If the scales tip in favor of one, they could end up with a nice fantasy return.

Also Consider: Rodney Smith, Malcolm Brown

Curtis Samuel - Carolina (vs. New Orleans) - DK: $5,300 FD: $6,100 Yahoo: $19

The Panthers will likely be without Christian McCaffrey and Mike Davis on Sunday. Desperate for playmakers, it wouldn’t be too surprising if they leaned on Curtis Samuel in the rushing and receiving game. Samuel has been a favorite of the NFL GPP Pivots column series, so it’s fitting that he’s listed once last time. The matchup vs. New Orleans doesn’t look great, but Samuel carries plenty of upside within his versatile skillset.

Adam Thielen - Minnesota (at Detroit) - DK: $7,400 FD: $7,900 Yahoo: $31

Justin Jefferson and Irv Smith Jr. are making plenty of noise for Minnesota, leaving most people to forget about Adam Thielen. The veteran is priced above those two youngsters, but he’s still a legitimate stacking extension of his aforementioned quarterback - especially in this promising matchup at Detroit. As discussed earlier, the Vikings will be without Dalvin Cook, which could create more opportunities for their other playmakers. Thielen is a touchdown-dependent receiver, but he could see more looks near the goal-line on Sunday.

Also Consider: Jerry Jeudy, Laviska Shenault Jr.

Noah Fant - Denver (vs. Las Vegas) - DK: $4,400 FD: $5,700 Yahoo: $17

I’m expecting the Broncos to keep chucking the ball, which is good for Fant’s fantasy outlook. He has 20 targets over his last two games, translating to 14 catches, 133 yards, and a score. Darren Waller, Mark Andrews, and (maybe) George Kittle will soak up majority of the TE roster spots in tournaments, but don’t forget about “next wave” guys like Fant - who I believe has similar upside to those popular candidates.

Also Consider: Mike Gesicki
