NHL Plays: December 17

by Michael Finewax

DRAFT is back for another season of quick and+ exciting daily fantasy action. Their DFS platform offers poolies with a chance to participate in a format that most of us have grown very accustomed to over the years. You can compete in a live snake draft in which the participants take a player with each pick. Unlike other DFS games, this gives you the opportunity to use your knowledge to craft a team that no one else will have because the players you select cannot be chosen by your competition.

The draft is quick as you are allotted just 30 seconds per pick and you take five players. Your team is comprised of three forwards, a defenseman and a goalie.

Your strategy can be dictated by the positions being selected ahead of you. For instance, if you are going last and everyone else has a goaltender then you can wait until your last pick to make that selection. Of course, selecting players going up against weaker competition or players who are riding hot streaks are always popular strategies as well.

Forward Rankings

1. Mikko Rantanen

2. Nathan MacKinnon

3. Sidney Crosby

4. Evgeni Malkin

5. David Pastrnak

6. Brad Marchand

7. Phil Kessel

8. Gabriel Landeskog

9. Artemi Panarin

10. Mark Stone

11. Max Domi

12. Ondrej Kase

There are so many good forwards for three and four-person pools. Grab the MacKinnon, Rantanen and Landeskog line if you can. The Pastrnak-Marchand duo is good as is Malkin with Crosby and Kessel. Otherwise wait on your forwards until the end.

Defenseman Rankings

1. Torey Krug

2. Roman Josi

3. Seth Jones

4. Shea Weber

Krug has been on fire since his return and scored Sunday. Josi has been solid for the Predators as had Jones for Columbus. Weber is settling in nicely back in Montreal. Wait until near the end to take your blueliner.

Goaltending Rankings

1. Pekka Rinne

2. Semyon Varlamov

3. Jaroslav Halak

4. Sergei Bobrovsky

Rinne has a matchup against the Ottawa Senators while Colorado is home to the Islanders. While there are no pushovers in the NHL, these two matchups are ideal. Halak’s Bruins are in Montreal after losing Sunday in Buffalo and will have a lot to prove while the Blue Jackets host Vegas and it could be the first time that Marc-Andre Fleury does not start in four weeks.

Keep in mind that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 4W, 2D, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL).

Matt Murray (Pittsburgh) - G - $8,000 FanDuel, $8,200 DraftKings

Thomas Chabot (Ottawa) - D - $5,400 FanDuel, $5,700 DraftKings

Jeff Petry (Montreal) - D - $4,600 FanDuel, $5,000 DraftKings

Max Pacioretty (Vegas) - W - $5,900 FanDuel, $4,900 DraftKings

Ondrej Kase (Anaheim) - W - $4,600 FanDuel, $5,700 DraftKings

David Krejci (Boston) - C - $5,800 FanDuel, $5,300 DraftKings

I’m a little wary of taking Murray but he certainly was good in his return to the lineup and seems to be the best bargain in net. Krejci continues to sparkle as the Bruins top center with Patrice Bergeron still out of action. Petry has five goals in his last six games and Chabot continues to be strong on the Ottawa blueline. Kase has six goals and 12 points in his last 10 games while Pacioretty is starting to score for the Vegas Golden Knights.
