NHL Plays: January 1

by Corey Abbott

DRAFT is back for another season of quick and exciting daily fantasy action. Their DFS platform offers poolies with a chance to participate in a format that most of us have grown very accustomed to over the years. You can compete in a live snake draft in which the participants take a player with each pick. Unlike other DFS games, this gives you the opportunity to use your knowledge to craft a team that no one else will have because the players you select cannot be chosen by your competition.

The draft is quick as you are allotted just 30 seconds per pick and you take five players. Your team is comprised of three forwards, a defenseman and a goalie.

Your strategy can be dictated by the positions being selected ahead of you. For instance, if you are going last and everyone else has a goaltender then you can wait until your last pick to make that selection. Of course, selecting players going up against weaker competition or players who are riding hot streaks are always popular strategies as well.

Remember, there are new pools available to play in but the players in my rankings will fall off the table as soon as the puck drops in their respective game.

Familiarize yourself with the rues and enjoy! It’s a great game! Tuesday’s three-game slate, which can include the Winter Classic in the afternoon, features three-person drafts and plenty of head-to-heads to participate in.

Forward Rankings:

Kane was named the NHL’s first star of the week after he registered five goals and one assist in two games. He is riding a seven-game point streak. Kane could be paired with Dylan Strome, who has posted three straight multi-point performances. The top line of the Bruins should be popular as well, especially with the Blackhawks set to start Cam Ward between the pipes. Outside of the Winter Classic, Vegas’ second line of Stastny, Tuch and Brandon Pirri has been rolling offensively. Johansen has been more dangerous since getting Arvidsson back.

Defense Rankings:

Josi stands out as the top defender to take because he has 28 points in 39 games this season, including, but Krug stands a good chance of getting on the scoresheet as well. Gustafsson and Schmidt have been hot recently, making them worthy of your attention.

Goaltender Rankings:

Fleury has surrendered just two goals on 62 shots in his last two starts, which both resulted in victories. He has lost to the Kings twice this season, but question marks surrounding the other starters should make him the top goalie off the board. Rask is coming off a win over Buffalo on Saturday and is probably the next-best option despite his inconsistencies. Saros may get the nod after Pekka Rinne played Monday afternoon.
