NHL Plays: November 18

by Michael Finewax

DRAFT is back for another season of quick and exciting daily fantasy action. Their DFS platform offers poolies with a chance to participate in a format that most of us have grown very accustomed to over the years. You can compete in a live snake draft in which the participants take a player with each pick. Unlike other DFS games, this gives you the opportunity to use your knowledge to craft a team that no one else will have because the players you select cannot be chosen by your competition.

The draft is quick as you are allotted just 30 seconds per pick and you take five players. Your team is comprised of three forwards, a defenseman and a goalie.

Your strategy can be dictated by the positions being selected ahead of you. For instance, if you are going last and everyone else has a goaltender then you can wait until your last pick to make that selection. Of course, selecting players going up against weaker competition or players who are riding hot streaks are always popular strategies as well.

Forward Rankings

1. Connor McDavid

2. Mikko Rantanen

3. Nathan MacKinnon

4. Patrick Kane

5. Sebastian Aho

6. Tyler Seguin

7. Alexander Radulov

8. Leon Draisaitl

9. Jamie Benn

10.Gabriel Landeskog

11. Mikko Koivu

12. Taylor Hall

McDavid is the obvious first pick like he should be every time the Oilers play. If you get both MacKinnon and Rantanen, then grab the rest of the line and take Landeskog. Better to be all-in on Sunday. The Stars line of Seguin, Radulov and Benn are good as well in a four-person tournament. Koivu has been on a tear of late with 11 points in his last seven games. Aho has been a stud most of the season. Hall is under the radar this season despite winning the Hart last year.

Defenseman Rankings

1. Ryan Suter

2. Tyson Barrie

3. Matt Dumba

4. Dougie Hamilton

I would wait until the last round to take a defenseman as all are relatively even. If you go off the board, Miro Heiskanen is a good pick as the former third overall pick in the 2017 Draft has taken over from the injured John Klingberg as the Stars quarterback on the power play. He has points in four of the Stars last six games.

Goaltending Rankings

1.Philipp Grubauer

2. Ben Bishop

3. Alex Stalock

4. Curtis McElhinney

There are quite a few backup goalies on the list. I’m going with the teams that I think will win, starting with Colorado, Dallas and Minnesota. Grubauer has a mediocre GAA and save percentage but is 3-1-2 this season as they take on Anaheim. Bishop is 7-5-1 with a 2.40 GAA thus far. I would take a goalie in the third round unless two have already been taken, in which case I would wait.

Keep in mind that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 4W, 2D, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL).

Alex Stalock (Minnesota) - G - $7,400 FanDuel, $7,700 DraftKings

Ian Cole (Colorado) - D - $3,800 FanDuel, $4,300 DraftKings

Matt Dumba (Minnesota) - D - $5,100 FanDuel, $5,800 DraftKings

Sebastian Aho (Carolina) - C - $6,500 FanDuel, $6,800 DraftKings

Alexander Radulov (Dallas) - W - $6,100 FanDuel

Drake Caggiula (Edmonton) - W - $4,300 FanDuel, $4,800 DraftKings

Curtis McElhinney (Carolina)-G- $7,400 DraftKings

Alex DeBrincat (Chicago) – W- $5,300 DraftKings

If you are looking for some bargains in addition to some big-name players (McDavid, MacKinnon, Rantanen, Seguin etc.) Caggiula is a nice pick as he is playing alongside McDavid. Aho has been spectacular this season and Radulov has been strong all season when healthy. Dumba has eight goals this season from the blueline while Cole has been surprisingly effective in fantasy.
