NHL Plays: Saturday

by Ryan Dadoun
Updated On: December 21, 2019, 3:25 pm ET

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 4W, 2D, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL) and Yahoo has a $200 budget for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

There are 13 games on Saturday, but I’ll be focused on the 10 evening contests.

Forwards:

Nathan MacKinnon (COL) – C - $9,000 FanDuel, $8,000 DraftKings, $35 Yahoo

MacKinnon is expensive, but he’s worth it. He’s on a seven-game point streak and has only been held off the scoresheet once in his last 16 games. He’s up to 21 goals and 53 points in 35 contests this season.

Evgeni Malkin (PIT) – C - $8,700 FanDuel, $6,900 DraftKings, $30 Yahoo

With Sidney Crosby sidelined, the Penguins have had to lean even more on Malkin, and he’s done his part. Malkin is going into Saturday’s action on a five-game point streak. He has nine goals and 30 points despite being limited to 22 contests.

Sebastian Aho (CAR) – C - $7,700 FanDuel, $6,800 DraftKings, $26 Yahoo

Aho has recorded at least a point in each of his last three games and five of his last six contests. That gives him 21 goals and 34 points in 35 games this season. He’ll be up against the Panthers tonight, which haven’t been a good team defensively.

Mitchell Marner (TOR) – W - $7,400 FanDuel, $6,800 DraftKings, $27 Yahoo

Marner missed nearly a month with an ankle injury and when he returned he needed a game to get back into the swing of things. Since then though, he’s been a key part of the Leafs with at least a point in each of his last six games. Even though he’s been held to 25 contests so far this season, he’s scored eight goals and 28 points.

Jonathan Huberdeau (FLA) – W - $7,100 FanDuel, $6,000 DraftKings, $27 Yahoo

Huberdeau has contributed four points in each of his last two games. That brings him up to five 3+ point contests already in 2019-20. He has 12 goals and 45 points in 34 games this season.

Ryan O'Reilly (STL) – C - $6,800 FanDuel, $6,300 DraftKings, $21 Yahoo

O'Reilly has contributed at least a point in four consecutive games. He’s been solid this season with six goals and 32 points in 36 contests, which isn’t at all surprising after he finished 2018-19 with 77 points. Obviously he’s not the most exciting of forwards, but he’s a great player to consider at that price point.

Sean Couturier (PHI) - $6,800 FanDuel, $6,500 DraftKings, $21 Yahoo

Couturier is on a three-game point streak and has contributed at least a point in nine of his last 13 contests. He’s been a pretty consistent contributor throughout the campaign and now has nine goals and 28 points in 35 contests.

Bargain Bin: Nicklas Backstrom (WAS) - $6,700 FanDuel/$6,000 DraftKings/$23 Yahoo, Travis Konecny (PHI) - $6,400 FanDuel/$5,800 DraftKings/$21 Yahoo, Tomas Hertl (SJS) - $6,200 FanDuel/$4,800 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Kyle Palmieri (NJD) - $6,200 FanDuel/$5,700 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Gustav Nyquist (CBJ) - $6,000 FanDuel/$5,000 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Kevin Hayes (PHI) - $5,700 FanDuel/$4,100 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Bryan Rust (PIT) - $5,600 FanDuel/$5,900 DraftKings/$23 Yahoo, Oliver Bjorkstrand (CBJ) - $5,300 FanDuel/$6,000 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo

Defensemen:

Kris Letang (PIT) – $7,200 FanDuel, $6,400 DraftKings, $23 Yahoo

Letang scored a goal on Friday to extend his point streak to four straight contests. That brings him up to nine markers and 25 point in 27 contests. He’s certainly pricey for a defenseman, but it’s hard to argue with those results.

Shea Weber (MON) – $6,800 FanDuel, $5,800 DraftKings, $25 Yahoo

Weber registered an assist on Thursday to extend his point streak to five games. He’s been a major contributor for the Canadiens this season with 11 goals and 29 points in 35 contests. Just as an aside, Montreal’s decision to trade PK Subban for Shea Weber back in 2016 looked pretty questionable at the time in part due how late into Weber’s career that his contract would run for. So far at least though, Weber has continued to perform into his mid-30s while Subban has struggled mightily in 2019-20 with New Jersey. It’s interesting how this trade has unfolded.

Bargain Bin: Roman Josi (NAS) - $6,600 FanDuel/$7,000 DraftKings/$27 Yahoo, Dougie Hamilton (CAR) - $6,200 FanDuel/$6,900 DraftKings/$25 Yahoo, Ivan Provorov (PHI) - $5,700 FanDuel/$5,200 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Torey Krug (BOS) - $5,500 FanDuel/$5,300 DraftKings/$21 Yahoo

Goaltenders:

Mikko Koskinen (EDM) - $8,200 FanDuel, $7,500 DraftKings, $30 Yahoo

The Oilers have been slumping lately and are coming off a bad loss to Pittsburgh, so I’m gambling on the idea that they’ll bounce back. It helps that Koskinen has been pretty good lately, allowing just three goals over his last two starts. He’ll be up against Montreal, which is a fairly middle-of-the-road team offensively.

Bargain Bin: Petr Mrazek (DET) - $7,900 FanDuel/$7,900 DraftKings/$31 Yahoo, Carter Hart (PHI) - $7,900 FanDuel/$7,500 DraftKings/$33 Yahoo, Jake Allen (STL) - $7,800 FanDuel/$7,800 DraftKings/$35 Yahoo
