NHL Plays: Sunday

by Michael Finewax
Updated On: March 1, 2021, 12:54 am ET

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL). Yahoo has a $200 cap for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

There are six games in the NHL on Sunday.

Forwards

Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh) - C - $7,800 (FanDuel), $6,800 (Draft Kings), $32 (Yahoo)

Crosby has 18 points in 19 games this season and has three goals and six points in his last five games. Crosby has never averaged under one point a game in his NHL career, dating back to the 2005-06 season and this won’t be the first one either. The Penguins face the Islanders and Crosby has two goals and seven points against New York this season.

David Pastrnak (Boston) - W - $8,500 (FanDuel), $No play (DraftKings), $35 (Yahoo)

Pastrnak started the season on the injured reserve list after undergoing off-season hip surgery but you would never know it by his production as he has nine goals and 16 points in only 11 games. He has been a top-three player of the week twice in the last month and plays on one of the best lines in the NHL with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand.

James van Riemsdyk (Philadelphia) - W - $6,500 (FanDuel), $6,900 (DraftKings), $22 (Yahoo)

This has been the best start in his career for James van Riemsdyk as he has nine goals and 23 points in just 17 contests. His career best is 62 points set in 82 games with Toronto in 2016-17 and despite the shortened 56 game schedule, he still has a good chance to set a new career high. Van Riemsdyk has points in 10 of his last 11 games and has six goals and 18 points in that stretch.

Bargain Bin: Kevin Hayes (Philadelphia) – C - $6,600 (FanDuel), $6,600 (Draft Kings), $19 (Yahoo), Mathew Barzal (Islanders) – C - $6,900 (FanDuel), $6,400 (DraftKings), $24 (Yahoo) Joel Farabee (Philadelphia) – W - $5,300 (FanDuel) $6,000 (DraftKings), $18 (Yahoo), Sam Reinhart (Buffalo) – W - $6,000 (FanDuel), $5,500 (Draft Kings), $18 (Yahoo)

Defensemen:

Kris Letang (Pittsburgh) - $6,100 (FanDuel), $5,800 (DraftKings), $18 (Yahoo)

Letang is a great bargain Sunday, especially with only six games on the slate. He has been red-hot of late as the defenseman has four goals and seven points during his four-game points streak. Letang has 14 points in 18 games as it looks as if he is still a top-ten fantasy defenseman in the NHL.

John Carlson (Washington) - $7,100 (FanDuel), $6,700 (DraftKings), $23 (Yahoo)

Carlson has a goal and six assists in a four-game points streak after slumping a bit with only one assist in his previous six contests. Carlson has 19 points in 20 games this season and continues to be the top fantasy defenseman over the last four seasons.

Bargain Bin:

Adam Fox (Rangers) - $4,700 (FanDuel), $No play (DraftKings), $21 (Yahoo), Seth Jones (Columbus) $5,100 (FanDuel), $6,000 (Draft Kings), $19 (Yahoo)

Goaltenders:

Alexandar Georgiev (Rangers) - $7,100 (FanDuel), $No play (Draft Kings), $22 (Yahoo)

The Rangers are going right back to their backup netminder as they face Boston Sunday afternoon. Georgiev was the starter Friday night and stopped 31-of-33 shots in a 6-2 win over the Bruins and coach David Quinn is counting on him to have Boston’s number yet again. He is 3-2-2 this season with a 2.81 GAA and a .901 save percentage.

Other plays: Kevin Lankinen (Chicago) - $7,400 (FanDuel), $8,300 (DraftKings), $38 (Yahoo)
