NHL Plays: Thursday

by Ryan Dadoun
Updated On: August 13, 2020, 6:36 am ET

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 4W, 2D, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL) and Yahoo has a $200 budget for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

Thursday has four games on tap, starting with Columbus versus Tampa Bay at 3:00pm ET.

Forwards:

Nikita Kucherov (Tampa Bay) – W – $8,400 FanDuel, $7,900 DraftKings, $31 Yahoo

Kucherov was one of the league’s top players in the regular season with 33 goals and 85 points in 68 contests. He’s been effective in the playoffs too with a goal and four points in four contests. Kucherov had a disappointing first round series against Columbus last year, but he’s off to a far better start this time after registering two assists in Game 1.

Sebastian Aho (Carolina) – C - $8,100 FanDuel, $7,200 DraftKings, $33 Yahoo

Aho is going into Thursday’s action on a five-game point streak, dating back to the regular season. In the playoffs alone, he has three goals and nine points in four contests, making him the scoring leader among active players.

Jonathan Marchessault (Vegas) – W - $7,000 FanDuel, $6,100 DraftKings, $22 Yahoo

Marchessault is coming off back-to-back multi-point games. The Golden Knights have a favorable matchup against the Blackhawks and he should do well in this series.

Bargain Bin: Sean Monahan (CGY) - $6,800 FanDuel/$5,400 DraftKings/$20 Yahoo, Andrei Svechnikov (CAR) - $6,600 FanDuel/$6,200 DraftKings/$27 Yahoo, Teuvo Teravainen (CAR) - $6,300 FanDuel/$5,700 DraftKings/$24 Yahoo.

Defensemen:

Victor Hedman (TBL) - $6,400 FanDuel, $5,600 DraftKings, $22 Yahoo

Hedman was questionable for Game 1 due to a lower-body injury, but he ended up logging an incredible 57:38 minutes in the quintuple overtime game. Obviously the length of the game contributed to his insane ice time, but he presumably wouldn’t have been used so heavily if he wasn’t 100%. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the league’s top defensemen.

Bargain Bin: Shea Theodore (VGK) - $6,100 FanDuel/$6,600 DraftKings/$22 Yahoo, Zach Werenski (CBJ) - $5,900 FanDuel/$5,200 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo.

Goaltenders:

Robin Lehner (Vegas) - $8,400 FanDuel, $8,300 DraftKings, $27 Yahoo

Lehner is an excellent goaltender and his first start against his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks, went well. He stopped 19 of 20 shots en route to a 4-1 win. The Golden Knights’ series against Chicago will continue today and Lehner should hold his own again.

Joonas Korpisalo (Columbus) - $7,400 FanDuel, $7,300 DraftKings, $32 Yahoo

Korpisalo stopped a record-breaking 85 shots on Tuesday and Columbus still lost. Regardless, it’s clear he’s at the top of his game. He has a 2-2 record, 1.34 GAA, and .960 save percentage in five playoff starts.

Bargain Bin: Cam Talbot (CGY) - $7,900 FanDuel/$7,900 DraftKings/$30 Yahoo.
