NHL Plays: Tuesday

Updated On: January 26, 2021, 1:07 pm ET

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL). Yahoo has a $200 cap for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

Connor McDavid (Edmonton) – C - $8,900 FanDuel, $8,500 DraftKings, $35 Yahoo

McDavid is expensive, but often worth it. He’s not just one of the best offensive threats in the league, he’s also one of the most consistent. He’s off to another strong start with four goals and 10 points in seven games and will almost certainly compete for the Art Ross Trophy as long as he stays healthy.

Brad Marchand (Boston) – W - $8,100 FanDuel, $7,900 DraftKings, $28 Yahoo

The Bruins have been without David Pastrnak, but that hasn’t slowed down Marchand. While having Pastrnak on his line is obviously the ideal, Marchand’s a high-end forward in his own right. He’s demonstrated that yet again this season by scoring three goals and seven points in his first five games.

Auston Matthews (Toronto) – C - $8,100 FanDuel, $8,000 DraftKings, $34 Yahoo

Matthews is more of a recommendation in FanDuel given his relative price on that site, but he’s a top-tier forward so he’s worthy of consideration at his other price points too. Matthews has three goals and six points in six games this season. That’s a great start and what makes it even more impressive is that he’s actually been a little less effective scoring-wise than normal. He has a 10.3 shooting percentage so far this season, which is well below his career average of 15.5%.

Mikko Rantanen (Colorado) – W - $7,900 FanDuel, $7,700 DraftKings, $29 Yahoo

Rantanen is red hot, entering tonight’s action on a five-game goal scoring streak. He’ll look to continue that against San Jose, which isn’t exactly the scariest of teams, especially when it comes to their goaltending.

Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida) - $7,500 FanDuel, $6,900 DraftKings, $25 Yahoo

The Florida Panthers have gotten off to a weird start this season. They’ve had games postponed against Dallas and Carolina due to the COVID outbreaks with the Stars and Hurricanes. Because of that, the Panthers have only played in two games this season, which makes it a little easy to overlook them. Don’t forget about Huberdeau though. He’s a great forward and is off to a strong start with a goal and four points in two contests this season.

Bargain Bin: Jack Eichel (BUF) - $7,400 FanDuel/$7,600 DraftKings/$30 Yahoo, Jake Guentzel (PIT) - $7,400 FanDuel/$6,400 DraftKings/$26 Yahoo, Taylor Hall (BUF) - $7,200 FanDuel/$7,300 DraftKings/$24 Yahoo, Filip Forsberg (NAS) - $7,100 FanDuel/$6,600 DraftKings/$22 Yahoo, Sean Monahan (CAL) - $7,100 FanDuel/$6,000 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Travis Konecny (PHI) - $6,900 FanDuel/$5,300 DraftKings/$21 Yahoo, Gabriel Landeskog (COL) - $6,700 FanDuel/$7,100 DraftKings/$25 Yahoo, Blake Wheeler (WPG) - $6,700 FanDuel/$7,000 DraftKings/$24 Yahoo.

Shea Theodore (Vegas) - $6,100 FanDuel, $7,000 DraftKings, $24 Yahoo

Theodore set a career-high last season with 46 points and if not for the fact that this is a shortened season, he might have done even better in 2020-21. As it is, he’s off to a fantastic start with three goals and six points in six games. His growth over the last few seasons has been impressive and given that he’s just 25-years-old, he should be among the league’s top defensemen for years to come. This might be a good time to add that the Ducks gave Theodore to the Golden Knights in exchange for the promise that Vegas wouldn’t take Josh Manson (they instead agreed to take Clayton Stoner). With all due respect to Manson, man did that decision ever backfire for Anaheim.

John Klingberg (Dallas) - $5,700 FanDuel, $6,200 DraftKings, $19 Yahoo

Klingberg has been one of the league’s best offensive defensemen since he broke into the league in 2014-15 and it doesn’t look like this season will be any exception. He already has four assists in two games. He’s probably going to be one of the better bets almost every time he’s available this season.

Drew Doughty (Los Angeles) - $5,400 FanDuel, $6,400 DraftKings, $18 Yahoo

Doughty is going into tonight’s action on a three-game point streak. He has two goals and four points in his last six contests. You’ll notice that he’s cheaper than Klingberg in FanDuel and Yahoo, but more expensive in DraftKings. If you’re only planning on taking one of Doughty or Klingberg today, I recommend picking whichever of the two is cheaper on the site of your choice.

Bargain Bin: Aaron Ekblad (FLA) - $5,400 FanDuel/$6,500 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo, Erik Karlsson (SJS) - $5,300 FanDuel/$5,000 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Samuel Girard (COL) - $4,900 FanDuel/$4,400 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Rasmus Andersson (CAL) - $4,700 FanDuel/$5,200 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Devon Toews (COL) - $4,500 FanDuel/$5,900 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo.

Anton Khudobin (Dallas) - $8,100 FanDuel, $8,500 DraftKings, $37 Yahoo

Khudobin is better value in FanDuel today than on other sites, but he’s worth considering no matter what you’re using. He’s off to a strong start with a 1.00 GAA and .961 save percentage in two starts. Perhaps more importantly, he’ll be facing Detroit tonight, which is among the least effective teams offensively.

Semyon Varlamov (NY Islanders) - $8,000 FanDuel, $8,100 DraftKings, $33 Yahoo

It’s hard to say no to Varlamov right now. Through three starts he’s allowed just one goal. He is up against the Washington Capitals tonight, which normally would be fairly concerning, but with Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov on the COVID protocol list and Tom Wilson questionable with a lower-body injury, the Capitals aren’t as dangerous a team as they normally are.

Bargain Bin: Brian Elliott (PHI) - $7,900 FanDuel/$8,000 DraftKings/$28 Yahoo, Darcy Kuemper (ARI) - $7,700 FanDuel/$8,000 DraftKings/$34 Yahoo, Joonas Korpisalo (CBJ) - $7,300 FanDuel/$8,000 DraftKings/$31 Yahoo, Juuse Saros (NAS) - $7,200 FanDuel/$8,300 DraftKings/$28 Yahoo.
