NHL Plays: Tuesday

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check NBC Sports EDGE's player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL) and Yahoo has a $200 budget for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

There are eight games scheduled for tonight.

Forwards:

Filip Forsberg (Nashville) – W - $7,600 FanDuel, $7,700 DraftKings, $22 Yahoo

Forsberg is one of the hottest high-end players available today. He’s scored three goals and eight points over his last eight games. He’s having a great season overall too with nine goals and 19 points in 21 contests. He’s a step below the star forwards playing today in price, but not in results.

Sean Couturier (Philadelphia) – C - $7,600 FanDuel, $6,800 DraftKings, $24 Yahoo

Couturier has only played in eight games this season, but when he has been in the lineup, he’s been great. He already has five goals and 11 points in 2020-21 despite his limited ice time. He’s probably not going to keep this up – his 27.8 shooting percentage looks particularly unsustainable – but he’s worth grabbing while he’s hot.

Elias Pettersson (Vancouver) – C - $7,000 FanDuel, $5,900 DraftKings, $20 Yahoo

Pettersson was limited to a single assist over his first six games this season. That’s been his only cold stretch so far in 2020-21 though. Since then, he’s scored nine goals and 19 points in 19 games while only being held off the scoresheet five times. This isn’t so much of a hot streak for Pettersson as it is his normal with his slow start being the outlier.

James van Riemsdyk (Philadelphia) – W - $6,700 FanDuel, $7,400 DraftKings, $24 Yahoo

What a difference a year makes. In 2019-20, it wasn’t clear if van Riemsdyk had much of a future with the Flyers, but he’s been a leader this season. He has 10 goals and 25 points in 18 contests this season. He hasn’t shown signs of slowing down either, scoring three goals and seven points in four games. I’m still not sure that he can keep this up, but you may as well grab him as long as he’s playing like this.

Bargain Bin: Nikolaj Ehlers (WPG) - $6,600 FanDuel/$7,300 DraftKings/$23 Yahoo, Tyler Toffoli (MON) - $6,300 FanDuel/$7,100 DraftKings/$22 Yahoo, Ondrej Palat (TBL) - $5,700 FanDuel/$5,000 DraftKings/$21 Yahoo, J.T. Miller (VAN) - $5,600 FanDuel/$5,500 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo, Ryan Strome (NYR) - $5,600 FanDuel/$5,300 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo, Joel Farabee (PHI) - $5,400 FanDuel/$6,200 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Drake Batherson (OTT) - $4,700 FanDuel/$4,300 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo

Defensemen:

Kris Letang (Pittsburgh) - $5,900 FanDuel, $6,000 DraftKings, $19 Yahoo

Letang got off to a quiet start by his standards, recording three assists through nine games. However, he’s been one of the best offensive defensemen since then with four goals and 11 points in his last 10 contests. Typically speaking, Letang has been a great option in daily leagues so now that he’s shaky off that cold start, he’s easy to recommend.

Thomas Chabot (Ottawa) - $5,400 FanDuel, $6,100 DraftKings, $17 Yahoo

The Senators’ offense has been great lately and Chabot has certainly benefited from that. He’s recorded eight assists in his last six games. Even when the Senators cool down, Chabot will still be a good option, but he’s an even better choice while they’re rolling.

Mikhail Sergachev (Tampa Bay) - $4,900 FanDuel, $4,900 DraftKings, $18 Yahoo

Despite being a sub-$5,000 choice in FanDuel and DraftKings, Sergachev is a pretty consistent contributor. He’s chipped in at least a point in 10 of his last 14 games en route to scoring a goal and 14 points over that span. If you’re looking for a strong defenseman at a discount price, then consider Sergachev.

Bargain Bin: Brett Pesce (CAR) - $4,200 FanDuel/$4,300 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Nick Leddy (NYI) - $4,200 FanDuel/$3,800 DraftKings/$14 Yahoo, P.K. Subban (NJD) - $4,100 FanDuel/$4,800 DraftKings/$15 Yahoo, Philippe Myers (PHI) - $3,900 FanDuel/$2,900 DraftKings/$12 Yahoo.

Goaltenders:

Igor Shesterkin (NY Rangers) - $7,300 FanDuel, $7,900 DraftKings, $35 Yahoo

Shesterkin hasn’t gotten the most support from the Rangers, but he’s still having a great rookie season. He has a 4-7-1 record, 2.44 GAA, and .917 save percentage in 13 games. Sure those numbers aren’t the best out there. They do look rather favorable though when you factor in his price. The other thing he has going for him today is that the Rangers are set to play Buffalo, which has been in a freefall lately. The Sabres are 6-10-3 after losing seven of nine games since returning from their pause and Buffalo has endured back-to-back shutouts against them.

Bargain Bin: Juuse Saros (NAS) - $7,000 FanDuel/$7,700 DraftKings/$20 Yahoo, Mackenzie Blackwood (NJD) - $6,800 FanDuel/$7,500 DraftKings/$32 Yahoo
