NHL Plays: Wednesday

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL) and Yahoo has a $200 budget for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

Auston Matthews (Toronto) – C – $7,900 FanDuel, $8,400 DraftKings, $34 Yahoo

Matthews has a goal and four points in four games, which I’d call a strong start, but that’s not particularly unusual for Matthews. He’s one of the best forwards in the league, but I’d take him over Connor McDavid, John Tavares, and Max Pacioretty tonight just because he’s cheaper.

Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton) – C – $7,800 FanDuel, $7,400 DraftKings, $34 Yahoo

Speaking of top-tier players who are a touch cheaper than their peers, Draisaitl is the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner and yet he’s $900 cheaper than teammate McDavid in FanDuel. That’s not to say McDavid isn’t worth the price – he’s obviously a superstar – but Draisaitl could provide similar benefits at a reduced cost.

Mark Stone (Vegas) – W – $7,400 FanDuel, $6,700 DraftKings, $26 Yahoo

Stone has opened the season on a three-game point streak, totalling a goal and five points in three contests. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him keep that streak going tonight when the Golden Knights face the Coyotes.

Elias Pettersson (Vancouver) – C – $6,900 FanDuel, $6,400 DraftKings, $25 Yahoo

Pettersson has just one assist in four games and while that’s obviously discouraging, there is a silver lining when it comes to daily fantasy. His struggles have resulted in his FanDuel price dropping from $7,400 at the start of the year to $6,900 now while his DraftKings price has gone from $6,800 to $6,400. Even if he’s off to a slow start, he’s still a great offensive talent and it’s just a matter of time before he breaks out. If you take him now you’re getting basically the same player he was a week ago at a cheaper price.

Bargain Bin: Phil Kessel (ARI) - $6,800 FanDuel/$5,700 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, William Nylander (TOR) - $6,800 FanDuel/$6,100 DraftKings/$24 Yahoo, Jonathan Marchessault (VGK) - $6,400 FanDuel/$5,000 DraftKings/$23 Yahoo, Tomas Tatar (MON) - $6,200 FanDuel/$5,900 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo, Tomas Hertl (SJS) - $6,000 FanDuel/$6,200 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo.

Shea Theodore (Vegas) – $6,100 FanDuel, $6,500 DraftKings, $24 Yahoo

Theodore is off to a solid start with two assists in three contests this season. He set a career-high last season with 13 goals and 46 points in 71 contests and he’s expected to be a high-end offensive defenseman for years to come. His current price is great for a blueliner of his caliber.

Bargain Bin: Colton Parayko (STL) - $5,000 FanDuel/$4,700 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Ryan Suter (MIN) - $4,800 FanDuel/$5,000 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Matt Dumba (MIN) - $4,500 FanDuel/$5,200 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Darnell Nurse (EDM) – $4,400 FanDuel/$4,200 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Alec Martinez (VGK) – $4,100 FanDuel/$4,600 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo.

John Gibson (Anaheim) – $7,400 FanDuel, $7,300 DraftKings, $25 Yahoo

Gibson is coming off a 34-save shutout against Minnesota on Monday. He’s expected to start against them again tonight and there’s a good chance that goes well again. Gibson has a career 7-3-1 record, 1.75 GAA, and .946 save percentage in 12 games against Minnesota, so besting them is nothing new for him. Given the price point, he’s great value.

Bargain Bin: Braden Holtby (VAN) - $7,300 FanDuel/$7,600 DraftKings/$29 Yahoo.
