Speaking of rankings, our Positional Outliers feature highlights a few players at each position where one of our experts has them ranked significantly higher or lower than the others. In this preview, we're offering a look at second base, where George Bissell isn't quite as high on Keston Hiura in his sophomore season as the rest of the crew.
Take a look:
George Bissell had Keston Hiura at 10. The composite ranking was 6.
This conservative ranking isn't an indictment of Hiura, rather a reflection of my preference for veteran alternatives like Whit Merrifield, DJ LeMahieu, Max Muncy and Jeff McNeil this year. The 23-year-old projects as a potential five-category monster with the potential to realistically pop 20-plus home runs and steal 15-plus bases, while also maintaining a solid batting average. My concern is that the Brewers allocated resources to a smorgasbord of veteran infielders, most notably Eric Sogard, Brock Holt and Jedd Gyorko, this offseason. If Hiura struggles for any reason, they won't hesitate to slash his playing time. That may be an unlikely outcome, but he's far less established and much riskier than the less exciting second basemen that I prefer to target this year. – George Bissell (@GeorgeBissell)
