by Thor Nystrom
Updated On: July 6, 2019, 4:53 pm ET

In late June, I gathered some of the top college fantasy football experts from around the country for a pair of BestBall drafts. Today, we're going to run down the Power 5 results. Group of 5 results and analysis can be found here.

Each owner was asked five questions about their draft process -- favorite picks, most unenviable picks, best teams, favorite sleepers, all that good stuff. Below you sits nearly 10,000 words of #CFF goodness from the top experts in the country. Owner answers begin below the draft results.

What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

I still consider myself a bestball novice and didn’t feel very confident that I effectively used my ammo, but I am pleased with my team. Only taking one kicker and one defense will end up being very foolish or very wise, I don’t see a middle ground. I opted to take a team’s cheaper option at RB in a couple of instances, similar to what NFL fantasy players have been doing with the Patriots’ backfield for years. I have the least proven team in the league. Much of my time recently has been spent evaluating coaching changes in college football and their impact on teams.

As such, I attempted to find players that I felt were being discounted but stepping into favorable situations. Many of the names on my team currently lack pizazz and have to fight for a starting position for the next couple of months.

However, using historical precedents in these various offensive schemes then you can see ceilings of my team that resemble those of Pat White (WVU), Alvin Kamara (Saints), Darrynton Evans (App St), D’Eriq King (Houston), Alex Collins (Arkansas), AJ Brown (Ole Miss), Jerry Jeudy (Alabama), D’Angelo Henderson (Coastal Carolina), KeeSean Johnson (Fresno State), Hakeem Butler (Iowa State), Michael Thomas (Saints), Mason Fine (North Texas), and Clive Walford (Miami). My team is full of risk but I think I have a very good shot to be a top contender.

What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

Taking UNC’s Dazz Newsome as WR55 and Minnesota’s Rodney Smith as RB52 were my two favorites. UNC hired Phil Longo to run their offense this year. He came from Sam Houston State and most recently Ole Miss. Over the past four years, his WR1 averaged 77-1180-10 receiving. He has locked up his spot in the slot, the alignment that AJ Brown dominated their target share at Ole Miss. 71-994-7 is the WR1’s historical floor in this scheme. Let’s assume for a moment that he is the Heels’ WR2. They’ve averaged 52-871-7 in this offense. 41-698-7 is the WR2’s historical floor. I believe he is a screaming value at WR55, even with the uncertainty they have at QB.

In my opinion, Rodney Smith will be the Gophers’ RB1 this year. Mo Ibrahim took over for him last season when he got hurt and finished with 1,000+ yards. Mo was drafted as the RB35 and four rounds before I took Rod. In PJ Fleck’s offense, the running backs are going to eat but they can be maddening on a weekly basis. Over the past six seasons, his RB1 averaged 216-1131-11 rushing. The RB2 averaged 127-592-5 on the ground. If Smith ends up as the RB1 then he will be one of the best values of the entire draft. If Ibrahim is the RB1 then I may only be able to count on a start-able week or two from Smith and there is little harm done to my team, given the small price I paid.

I regret taking Ole Miss QB Matt Corral as QB8 in the third round. I'm fine with that ranking of him, it's just earlier than i wanted to take a quarterback. He was the last player in my top QB tier that I was considering with that pick. I considered a “Late Round QB” strategy given the depressed QB scoring in this format. Looking back at Rich Rod’s past sixteen QBs, they’ve only thrown the ball 24 times-per-game but averaged 174-914-10 rushing. I believe Corral will throw far more than that but is unlikely to reach those rushing numbers. I feel more satisfied by taking James Blackman as QB16 in the eighth round and JT Daniels as QB38 in the seventeenth round.

Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

Scott Bell took Northwestern’s Isaiah Bowser as RB24 one pick before my turn in the fourth round. That one drew an instinctive guttural roar from me. Sure, Northwestern’s offensive line may be really poor again but their RB1 averaged 268-1261-9 rushing and 26 catches over the past five seasons. I’m gonna cheat and list another. Connor Allen taking Oregon State’s Isaiah Hodgins as WR32 in the sixth round pained me. Hodgins is an NFL player, in an offense that should provide extremely favorable game scripts, and playing for an OC whose WR1 averaged 77-1050-8 over the past seven seasons.

Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

In the twelfth and thirteenth rounds, my league mates selected quarterbacks Quentin Harris (Duke), Ryan Willis (Virginia Tech), and Tyler Huntley (Utah). I think all of those players could have good seasons and be regular contributors to their teams. At running back, my colleagues took Breece Hall (Iowa State) in the nineteenth and Wayne Taulapapa (Virginia) in the twenty-first round. I liked both of those values for young, talented backs with favorable systems and navigable depth charts. There were quite a few WRs that I liked taken in rounds 12-16, primarily the shots taken on Zacchaeus’, Isabella’s (OC now at Pitt*), and Deebo’s replacements.

Matt Bushman (BYU) in the fourteenth and Trey Pugh (Northwestern) in the twentieth were my two favorite late round TE picks by my peers. As far as my own team goes, I really liked what I was able to pull off at picks 14, 15, and 16. Taking Georgia Tech RB Jordan Mason, Indiana WR Donovan Hale, and Iowa State WR Tarique Milton, I landed three players that step into potential roles that average 207-1198-15 rushing, 77-1074-8 receiving, and 70-980-9 receiving. In fairness, there is a chance that none of these guys are the primary breadwinners, hence the discount, but if I hit on any of the three then I’ll be an excellent shape to make a title run.

Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

Scott Bell, Josh Chevalier, and Mike Bainbridge had my favorite picks from rounds 1-5. Beyond that, I appreciated Mike’s philosophy which appeared to me as looking for the next Rico Bussey, Kelvin Harmon, Bryce Love, Andy Isabella, Hakeem Butler, and AJ Brown. I’m probably just projecting here because he took a similar approach to me with his later picks. Unfortunately for Mike, I will be right more often than him and he will be an honorable, dignified runner-up this year.

What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

I was sticking close to my player projections to start the draft, which led me to WR-QB-WR-WR through four rounds. After that start, I spent the next 6-of-9 (nice) picks on running backs. Most of these backs are expected to lead their committees in touches, but I’ll need at least one to break out as a fantasy RB1 to come in first place. That’s obviously my weakness, but I’ll live with that since I have Laviska Shenault, Kalija Lipscomb, Justyn Ross, Tyler Vaughns, and Devonta Smith at receiver.

What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

Devonta Smith (Alabama, WR) in Round 12 was my favorite pick. Smith will have multiple startable weeks in this elite offense, and in bestball, I don’t have to guess which ones they’ll be. Plus, I get the upside if Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, or Jaylen Waddle were to miss time. My biggest reach was Rodrigo Blankenship (Georgia, K) in Round 15 since a kicker like Matt Ammendola was available in Round 20.

Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

Michael Pittman (USC, WR) in Round 7 was a steal. The offense will be more pass-heavy under OC Graham Harrell, and Pittman is an NFL talent. Last year, Pittman’s total production was mediocre with J.T. Daniels struggling, but they just missed on a few valuable deep targets. If Daniels can show more deep accuracy, Pittman will have a handful of high-scoring fantasy weeks. That’s perfect for bestball leagues like this one.

Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

Connor Allen found a bargain with Anthony Schwartz (Auburn, WR) in Round 16. The schedule is rough and Schwartz is raw, but that 4.3-speed and that opportunity for targets is enough to be more than worthwhile this deep into the draft. Schwartz only needs a few 50-yard touchdowns for Allen to cash in on this pick, and there’s a chance he has developed into a more consistent weekly producer.

Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

Mike Bainbridge is set at quarterback (Sam Ehlinger, Jamie Newman), running back (Max Borghi, JaTarvious Whitlow, Keaontay Ingram), and tight end (Patrick Freiermuth). So if he can get a breakout season from a receiver, we’ll be in trouble. Bainbridge drafted two USC receivers -- smart man -- and filled out the rest with some upside receivers like Penn State freshman Justin Shorter.

What was your strategy going into the draft, and were you able to implement it? What do you like and dislike about your team?

I don't see a huge difference in QB talent when it comes to the top tier and the third or fourth tier of signal callers in this league's talent pool. So I went into the draft open to punting on QB at the top of the draft in an effort to give myself a high floor at RB and WR. I'm happy with how it worked, getting a pair of workhorse Big Ten RBs and three top options for Big 12 teams that like to air it out.

And I was still able to walk away with the starting QBs for three traditional fantasy-friendly offenses -- Syracuse Texas Tech and Missisippi State -- and only had to give up 5th, 8th, 14th and 15th rounders to make that happen. So all in all, I was really happy with how the strategy played out. The only thing I wasn't in love with was which WRs fell to me. It's a long wait from No. 3 overall to No. 26 and No. 31 for my second and third rounders. I'm happy with Reagor at 26, but was hoping a Tyler Johnson/JD Spielman type would have been available at 31. Collin Johnson has a ton of upside, but I worry a bit about his consistency.

What was your favorite pick that you made? Which do you regret?

My favorite pick would be either my third or fourth RB taken -- Tavien Feaster or Pooka Williams. My strategy to take reliable, workhorse RBs at the top gave me flexibility to take chances later in the draft. Feaster's landing spot is still TBD, but it's looking more and more like it'll be Virginia Tech or South Carolina. The former five-star seems like a safe bet to walk into starting jobs at either of those places and could be a real sneaky value pick in drafts this summer. Williams has the upside of an RB1 in Les Miles' run-heavy offense, but all of that depends on his legal situation.

With Jonathan Taylor, Isaiah Bowser and Tavien Feaster already in the fold, that seemed like a risk worth taking in the ninth round -- and the risk felt even more worthwhile when I was able to pick Khalil Herbert seven or eight rounds later. My biggest regret probably centers around questionable roster management in the latter stages of the draft. Instead of taking two Ole Miss WRs in an effort to give myself a higher likelihood of backing "the guy" in that passing game with their top three targets now gone, I probably should have played it safe and walked away with two kickers on my roster. I'll be forfeiting points at kicker for a minimum of two weeks this season, so I'm already handicapping myself in a competitive league against smart owners. Definitely avoidable.

Name one pick another owner made in the top 10 rounds that made you insanely jealous.

This is a bit of a cop out answer, but I thought there was a strong run of RB picks in the fourth round that all screamed "great value" -- and made me curse to myself as I waited for the pick come back to me because I wanted to get a solid RB2.

Zach's Kennedy Brooks pick, Mike's JaTarvious Whitlow pick, Christopher's Salvon Ahmed pick and Joe's Jashaun Corbin pick were all good -- and quite frankly, better than the majority of the RBs taken a round earlier in my book. I'd prefer most, if not all, of those guys over the five RBs that went directly before them in the third round -- Najee Harris, Larry Roundtree, Scottie Phillips, CJ Verdell and Cam Akers.

Which player selected in Round 12 or later do you think has the best chance of becoming a weekly CFF starter this year?

I like Zach's selection of Maurice Washington at that stage of the draft for the reasons I pulled the trigger on Pooka Williams. In a league where you're only going to get points from your top 2 RBs each week, why not aim high on a few high risk, high reward guys toward the end of the draft? Other late picks that could pay off big: Nate's decision to grab both Auburn QBs. And then selfishly, me doing the same thing with the Mississippi State QBs.

Outside of your own team, which do you see as the most talented in the league post-draft?

Sign me up for Nate's team. He took a similar draft path as I did, so if I try and convince myself his team will be good, then maybe mine won't end up being half bad, either.
