Dose: Peterson Nearing Return?

In our first update on Adrian Peterson (knee, I.R.) in a week, “All Day” said on Tuesday that his plan is to return to practice this week and hopes to play as soon as Week 16 against the Packers. This week against the Colts is out of the question, but Peterson is clearly taking steps in the right direction.

"My plan, and my vision, is to be back for the Green Bay game. That’s what I’m envisioning," Peterson said. "Of course, the perfect scenario would be we win out and I’m able to rest up for three weeks, and be ready for the playoffs. That’s the perfect scenario. But I’ll be out there this week practicing, and I’ll go from there.”

The Vikings don’t have the luxury of sitting back. At 7-6, they’re currently the No. 8 seed in the NFC and one game out of the playoff picture. Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata will handle backfield duties for at least another week in a plus home spot against a Colts defense that has laid down. Peterson is worth picking up wherever he’s available, especially for some different players owners aren’t going to start this week. There’s still an outside shot he’ll be ready for fantasy championship week. Even then, it’ll be impossible to expect anything out of him after such a long layoff coming off a torn meniscus.

In Other News…

After sitting out the Falcons’ 42-14, blowout win over the Rams last week, the loss that got Jeff Fisher fired in Los Angeles, Julio Jones (toe) will not practice Wednesday. Coach Dan Quinn said the team will see how he feels later in the week before making a decision on his Week 15 status against the 49ers. It’s really tough for fantasy owners here in the thick of the fantasy playoffs, but the Falcons know they don’t need Jones in order to beat San Francisco. Odds are probably better that Jones doesn’t play Sunday. Atlanta should be able to waltz right through this one and get a win.

The Jets host the Dolphins on a short week Saturday night and are just trying to close out a lost season. Matt Forte injured his knee early in the Week 14 win over the 49ers. Afterward, he said he felt cracking and popping in the knee. On Tuesday, coach Todd Bowles simply said Forte is day to day and failed to go into any sort of detail about the injury. Forte is probably a long shot to suit up Saturday, leaving Bilal Powell as the favorite to handle the vast majority of the backfield work.

Michael Floyd is wrapping up a nightmare contract season. On top of poor on-field play, Floyd was just busted for drunk driving Monday morning. On Tuesday, coach Bruce Arians said he’s talking with the organization about the parameters of the CBA and seeing what ways he’s allowed to punish Floyd. Arians said he’s considering benching Floyd, and beat writers expect a more informative update at Wednesday’s practice. If Floyd is benched, J.J. Nelson should step into a much larger role with John Brown still being limited due to his hamstring issues related to the sickle-cell trait.

Quarterback & Running Back Slants

Rookie RB Kelvin Taylor was promoted from the practice squad. … Ravens sent RB Lorenzo Taliaferro (hamstring) to I.R. The former buzz-worthy prospect has 14 carries over the past two seasons. … Cowboys activated Darren McFadden (elbow) off the NFI list and waived RB Darius Jackson. Former Jets and Ravens TE Konrad Reuland passed away earlier this week. May he rest in peace. … Rams placed backup TE Cory Harkey on I.R. with a triceps injury. … Bears signed TE MyCole Pruitt off the Vikings’ practice squad. He’s a solid flier with an athletic profile. … Texans placed WR Braxton Miller on I.R. after he hurt his shoulder in Week 13. He made zero impact as a rookie. UDFA WR Wendall Williams was promoted to take his roster spot. … Darrius Heyward-Bey (foot) isn’t expected to return in Week 15. … Sammy Watkins wants to play the final three games, even with the Bills’ playoff hopes on life support.
