Penguins In Eastern Basement

by Ryan Dadoun

Are the Pittsburgh Penguins really this bad?  It’s hard to fathom after back-to-back championships in 2016 and 2017 and another strong campaign in 2017-18, but after Saturday’s loss to Ottawa, the Pittsburgh Penguins have the worst record in the Eastern Conference at 7-8-3.  That’s due to a collapse in recent weeks as the Penguins got off to a 6-1-2 start.

It’s not just one thing that’s been holding back the Penguins, but the most concerning part of all this has been goaltender Matt Murray.  He played an important role in the Penguins’ winning those back-to-back championships, but 2017-18 was a mixed bag for him and he’s been terrible so far this season.  When the Penguins orchestrated Marc-Andre Fleury’s move to the Vegas Golden Knights, they did so with the belief that Murray was ready to assume the starting job and at the time, that seemed like a rational move.  Now Murray’s future is far murkier and consequently, the Penguins’ future is too.
