In this week's Numbers Game, we'll be looking at each player's fantasy value on a category-by-category basis. Which player depends most heavily on steals for their fantasy value? That would be Justise Winslow, whose 2.0 steals per game are the bedrock of his fantasy value. DeAndre Bembry, Josh Hart and P.J. Tucker are also near the top of the board when it comes to dependency on steals -- all of them get at least 25% of their 8-cat value in that single category.
Which players have earned the 'specialist' label when it comes to 3-pointers this season? Stephen Curry ranks fifth with 22.3% of his value beyond the arc, but the most triple-dependent player is J.J. Redick, with Tim Hardaway Jr., Wes Matthews and Joe Harris not far behind. The numbers I'm referencing are based on my own 8-cat values. If you're interested in my methodology, dig around the Numbers Game archive!
As usual, I've eliminated every player who didn't meet basic criteria for minutes (15.0 per game) and games played (no team has played more than 11 games, so I'm going with a generous five-game cut-off). Here are notable players who did not make the cut:
Minutes (>15): Jordan Bell, Kyle O'Quinn, Nerlens Noel, Willy Hernangomez, Gorgui Dieng, Alfonzo McKinnie, Tim Frazier and Norman Powell. Very few other players of note for fantasy in this sub-15-minute group, though all the big men I listed have strong potential if circumstances change (e.g. Dieng is traded to an ideal team, or an injury thrusts Noel or Hernangomez into the starting lineup) and allow them to be unleashed.
Games Played (>5): Will Barton, Kevin Love, Kris Dunn, Dwight Howard, JaMychal Green, Kevin Knox, Chandler Parsons, Bobby Portis
Editor’s Note: If you love Fantasy Basketball, you have to be playing on DRAFT. It's daily fantasy basketball snake drafts instead of salary caps. They take minutes to complete, and there's even auction drafts! No more setting lineups or constantly worrying about pros, just draft and win! Right now DRAFT is giving Rotoworld readers an exclusive FREE entry into a real money draft when you make your first deposit! Here's the link!
It's a low bar to clear and there were still 266 players who qualified, which I trimmed to 175 based upon overall 8-cat value. I'm using 8-cat because it doesn't give an automatic boost to low-minute, low-usage guys who simply don't touch the ball (and therefore don't turn it over). I remain a staunch advocate for 9-cat rotisserie (roto) leagues as the ideal format, but for the purposes of this early-season column we're going 8-cat!
The final cut (down to top-175) eliminated guys like Harrison Barnes, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Avery Bradley, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Marcin Gortat, Josh Jackson, Allen Crabbe, Mario Hezonja, Trey Burke, Collin Sexton, Mitchell Robinson, Kyle Anderson, Marvin Williams, and a pair of prominent 76ers -- Markelle Fultz and Dario Saric. The No. 176 overall value was Jonathan Isaac, so he too is gone. This doesn't mean these guys don't/won't have value! I simply must draw the line somewhere and the statistics dictate that they're out. If you own any of them, you get it.
Editor's Note: Looking for an edge when it comes to fantasy hoops? Our new NBA DFS Toolkit has a Lineup Optimizer, Customizable Projections, Next Man Up tool and more for FanDuel, DraftKings and Yahoo! And for season-long, the NBA Season Pass provides weekly projections, rankings, Pickups of the Day and more.
Here is the breakdown for how much value each player derives from specific categories. Using Hassan Whiteside as a quick example, you'll see that 32.9% of his 8-cat value has come from blocks this season. He's also getting 33.5% of his value from rebounds, which means that two-thirds of his fantasy production is rooted in two categories. He's a terrific source of FG%, of course, so the fact that he only gets 18.1% of his value there doesn't imply he's underperforming -- he's simply a monster in boards and blocks.
A final note: Players who have damaging FG% or FT% aren't listed as negative in those categories, just extremely low. This is a consequence of 'zeroing out' each category. If you have any questions, I'll happily discuss my methodology...just send me a message on Twitter!

I should caution that the category percentages for players are not intended to be compared to other players. You can see that Trae Young is getting 25.5% of his value from assists, which is similar to the value Ersan Ilyasova gets from FT%. Obviously, the two things aren't equitable -- both players' category impacts are tethered to their personal fantasy value.
The numbers above can be used in myriad ways. If you need to improve your FG percentage and boards, it makes sense to float a trade offer for Domantas Sabonis since most of his value comes from those two categories. If it's scoring you're after, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Kyle Kuzma are probably the easiest points-specialists to target without giving up a stud in return.
If you are punting a category, this is a goldmine. We already know the guys who will tank your FT% and get no value from that category, but if you're punting assists, for instance, it's helpful to see that you're wasting 13.4% of Luka Doncic's value on a category you don't even want. In writing this paragraph, I noticed that Hassan Whiteside is dead last among qualifying players in assists -- he has one assist in eight games played. That's one assist in 222 minutes of action. Yikes.
