Bettor wins half million dollars on Nuggets

Imagine betting $550,000 on a basketball game.

That's exactly what one customer at a William Hill sportsbook in Las Vegas did Tuesday night on Game 7 between the Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz.

The bettor risked $550,000 to win $500,000 on the Nuggets to win the game.

And what a rollercoaster it was!

Denver raced out to a 50-36 halftime lead behind a stellar first half from Nikola Jokic. Utah cut the deficit to five points by the end of the third quarter. Then, the two teams went back-and-forth for the entire fourth quarter. The largest lead in the last seven minutes of the game was just four points.

You can almost picture the sweat rolling down the back of this bettor's neck.

Rudy Gobert flushed down an alley-oop to tie the game 78-78 with 47.5 seconds to go. At this point, our mystery bettor was likely breathing heavily into a brown paper bag. Then, Jokic dropped in a hook shot with 27.8 seconds left to set up one of the wildest gambling finishes of all-time.

80-78 Denver. Utah ball.

Jazz star guard Donovan Mitchell raced into the lane with 11 seconds to go. The Nuggets poked the ball away, but for some reason, raced down the floor to try and score. Torrey Craig missed a layup with five seconds left to set up an unthinkable finish.

Gobert hauled in the rebound and passed the ball ahead to Mike Conley. Conley crossed half court, darted around a defender and launched a 26-footer from the left wing for the win.

The ball was halfway down the hoop before bouncing out and sealing the victory for Denver. Exhale. Ballgame. 80-78 Nuggets. And over a million dollar swing for one lucky sports bettor who is now $500,000 richer.

No sweat.
