You know the NFL is back when I'm starting to key in on my favorite weekend teaser play.
For those new to this, a teaser is a bet that allows you to adjust the point spread six points whichever way you choose. You must select a minimum of two bets, but you have to win all the bets in the teaser to cash the ticket.
While some people like to maximize their payout and do four or five-team teasers, your chances of winning get increasingly more difficult with every extra team you add. I’ll stick with the standard two-teamer and tease through the most important numbers in football – 3 and 7.
I’ve thought about the first leg pretty much all offseason. Let’s go to Sunday Night Football. The Cowboys are always a popular pick for bettors. The public seems to back them almost blindly, especially when they’re a short road favorite. Sportsbooks will certainly be rooting for the Rams, but I want more than three points to play with.
I’ll gladly tease the Rams from +3 to +9. This enhances your bet because you move off the +3 and adjust the point spread through 4, 6 and (most importantly) 7 all the way up to +9. If the Cowboys win by a touchdown, we’re in the clear.
As for the second option, I thought about the Colts from -7.5 to -1.5 and the Panthers from +3 to +9, but I find the most value on the Denver Broncos. The favorite has already flipped in that game with Denver opening -2 and Tennessee now -2.5. Von Miller will be missed immensely for Denver, but I can’t justify this big of a move on the Titans, who enter the season pretty overvalued.
I can tease the Broncos from +2.5 through 3, 4, 6 and 7 all the way to +8.5. That’s 11 points up from the opening line too, which I’m extremely happy about. Denver -2.5 to Denver +8.5? Count me in.
Tease the Rams +9 to the Broncos +8.5.
