New York Islanders vs Tampa Bay Lightning betting preview

Starting Goalies

Islanders: Semyon Varlamov - 9-4, 2.00 GAA, .921 SV% or Thomas Greiss - 2-1, 1.08 GAA, .960 SV%

Lightning: Andrei Vasilevskiy - 10-3, 1.91 GAA, .931 SV%

Islanders Head Coach Barry Trotz made a bold move going with Thomas Greiss in Game 7 against the Flyers, and it paid off. Making his first appearance since Game 4 of the series, Greiss delivered a 16-save shutout win.

Varlamov will likely be back between the pipes for New York on Monday night, as historically he’s been better than Greiss against Tampa.

Andrei Vasilevskiy is playing his best hockey at just the right time. His 10 wins lead all playoff netminders, and his goals-against average has dropped to an impressive 1.91 — down from 2.56 during the regular season. The 2019 Vezina Trophy winner also leads every remaining goalie in save percentage (save for Greiss), but he’s also played ten more games.

Islanders: None
Lightning: Nikita Kucherov RW (Questionable), Jan Rutta D (Out), Steven Stamkos C (Out)

Betting Trend to Know

Lightning are 5-1 in their last 6 playoff games as a favorite. Find the latest NHL betting trends for Islanders vs. Lightning.

Moneyline Pick

It would be easy to label this game as Tampa’s explosive offense against New York’s suffocating defense, but that’s not really the case. The Islanders are averaging 3.38 goals per game in the bubble, while the Lightning average 3.00.

However, the Bolts are 12-4 against the Isles in their last 16 tilts, they’re deeper, and most importantly, they’re rested. Tampa dispatched the Boston Bruins in five, while New York needed seven games (including three overtime affairs) to move past the Philadelphia Flyers.

Tampa winger Nikita Kucherov is questionable for Game 1 after taking a stick to the face last week, but he’s been practicing with the team, and I expect him to play.

PREDICTION: Lightning ML (-160)

Over/Under Pick

Both clubs have played terrific defense in the bubble, with the Islanders allowing 1.94 goals per game and the Lighting just behind at 2.31.

Varlamov’s inconsistency makes me a little nervous, but the is Under is 3-1-2 in the last six meetings between these two teams, so that’s where I’m leaning.

PREDICTION: Under 5 (-105)

Prop pick

Each of these teams likes to score early and ride those leads to victory. The Lightning have scored first in nine of their 13 postseason games, and since they’ve been resting for a week, they should come out fresh and fast, and there’s money to be made on them leading after the opening stanza.

PREDICTION: Lightning first period ML (+158)
