Liverpool (+100) vs Chelsea (+250, Draw +275)
The start of Wednesday’s game will take a little while longer to get underway, with Liverpool officially presented their English Premier League title in the season's final home game.
Liverpool was dropped 2-1 by Arsenal on July 15 and drew 1-1 with lowly Burnley on July 11, continuing the club’s inconsistent efforts since their COVID-19 return. The Reds struck early versus Arsenal but then conceded two goals in the first half. They also gave up a first-half marker to Brighton on July 8.
Chelsea has been active in the opening 45 minutes, scoring six first-half goals in their six games this month (including two coming in injury time before the halftime whistle).
PREDICTION: Halftime result – Chelsea +260
Both teams rank top-3 in corners taken this Premier League season, with Liverpool second at 247 and Chelsea right behind them at 244. The Reds have been especially busy from the corner in recent games, with totals of 10, 13 and 12 over the past three outings.
Chelsea hasn’t been as active from the corner in July. They’ve attempted just 34 total corners in the past six games for an average of 5.7 per contest. With the Blues predicted to take the first half, Liverpool will turn up the pressure in the final 45 minutes and attempt their share of corners.
PREDICTION: Corner handicap – Liverpool -1 (+120)
The one thing that stands out about Chelsea games since the return to the schedule is the surplus of action: good and bad. The Blues have seen at least three combined goals scored in seven of their eight games since the COVID-19 shutdown, with an average of 3.5 goals on the board per contest.
Liverpool games have seen their share of scoring as well, with three or more goals recorded in four of their seven games since the restart. These clubs combined for three goals in a 2-1 win for the Reds back at Stamford Bridge in September.
PREDICTION: Over 2.5 (-175)
Liverpool gets to hoist their trophy in front of an empty stadium Wednesday, which is about the only thing left on their checklist for the season besides keeping an unbeaten record at Anfield Road. Chelsea, on the other hand, still has plenty of work to do.
The Blues not only need to secure the fourth spot in the table for a Champions League bid but want to keep their current form before the FA Cup final on August 1. Chelsea blasted Manchester United 3-1 in the semifinals on Sunday and have won four of their last five contests, with seven victories in their nine games since the restart.
Frank Lampard knows he still has a shot at three points in the EPL finale versus Wolves on July 26. Whether he presses for the win here or decides to rest some top performers remains to be seen. But we like Chelsea to continue its solid work and there’s no shame in leaving Anfield with a point
